Wow!,
By A Customer
This review is from: FLCL, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
Some of you probably hate the FLCL manga. But, if you really liked the OVA series, you should like this. But - be advised: the manga is almost entirely different from the animation.I actually wish they would have made the animation based on the manga, but it's better that we have them both. The manga is a little more graphic and intense (and sketchy, confusing), but you really have to shove the book up to your nose to understand it and put the frames together. Then, you realize the style and jumpy drawing is the mood of the story, etc. I hope you pay close attention and enjoy it...

Harmonious Discord,
By Antonio D. Paolucci "Collector of Entertainment" (Beaver Falls, PA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: FLCL, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
FLCL was easily the strangest anime I have ever seen, even stranger than those last two episodes of Evangelian, or the semi-weird Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. The manga is very much like the anime, in that it does little to explain itself. If you don't get what's going on, who cares. Someday down the line you will, but for now there is more story to unfold, more action to witness, and so on and so forth.
In volume 2, easily the most valuable of the two volume series, contains a great added story that can't be seen in the anime (at least, not the entire thing). It involves Naota and Ninamori, and how they are actually very much alike. The anime buzzes through this quick interaction between these characters in thirty quick minutes, but in the manga it takes two chapters to tell it. I won't spoil it, but in the manga, Ninamori and Naota never go to his house because of the news scandal involving her father and his affair. It's actually so startlingly different and well done that I wonder why it was neglected in the anime. It could have added at least another episode to the short OVA. Another thing you'll notice is that one of the key characters in the series, Mr. Eyebrows, is gone completely. He plays no role in the manga. This volume of the manga isn't perfect, though. The problem I had was actually a story problem, that being the abrupt ending, as though they just ran out of ideas. Also, like the first volume, the second volume has a strange, non-linear art style that is sometimes a little too wild and experimental. Few outside the fans of the series will find anything worth reading here. In fact, most who pick it up will no doubt leave with the impression that it was one of the worst manga they had ever seen. That being said, I can't recommend it to anyone but fans of the series, or possibly fans of Evangelion. Or for anyone who enjoys experimentation, because here is the ultimate experiment, and a good one at that.

This is the second volume of the manga version of the amazing OAV series "FLCL" by Gainax (The Secret of Blue Water, Evangelion, His and Her Circumstances). The manga can't reach the peaks of the anime, but I think it should be read by everyone who loved the series.
