5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Some of you probably hate the FLCL manga. But, if you really liked the OVA series, you should like this. But - be advised: the manga is almost entirely different from the animation.

I actually wish they would have made the animation based on the manga, but it's better that we have them both. The manga is a little more graphic and intense (and sketchy, confusing), but...

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfit for anyone to read
If you're considering buying this because you saw the series and want more of the same good stuff, don't bother. Not only was the art bad, but they seem to have tried to compress every episode of the series into one uber-story with no sense of pacing or cohesive plot. Furthermore, and this is the worst in my opinion, they RUINED the characters! Haruko is no longer a...

Some of you probably hate the FLCL manga. But, if you really liked the OVA series, you should like this. But - be advised: the manga is almost entirely different from the animation.

I actually wish they would have made the animation based on the manga, but it's better that we have them both. The manga is a little more graphic and intense (and sketchy, confusing), but you really have to shove the book up to your nose to understand it and put the frames together. Then, you realize the style and jumpy drawing is the mood of the story, etc.

I hope you pay close attention and enjoy it...

4.0 out of 5 stars Harmonious Discord, December 30, 2005
This review is from: FLCL, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
FLCL was easily the strangest anime I have ever seen, even stranger than those last two episodes of Evangelian, or the semi-weird Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. The manga is very much like the anime, in that it does little to explain itself. If you don't get what's going on, who cares. Someday down the line you will, but for now there is more story to unfold, more action to witness, and so on and so forth.

In volume 2, easily the most valuable of the two volume series, contains a great added story that can't be seen in the anime (at least, not the entire thing). It involves Naota and Ninamori, and how they are actually very much alike. The anime buzzes through this quick interaction between these characters in thirty quick minutes, but in the manga it takes two chapters to tell it. I won't spoil it, but in the manga, Ninamori and Naota never go to his house because of the news scandal involving her father and his affair. It's actually so startlingly different and well done that I wonder why it was neglected in the anime. It could have added at least another episode to the short OVA. Another thing you'll notice is that one of the key characters in the series, Mr. Eyebrows, is gone completely. He plays no role in the manga.

This volume of the manga isn't perfect, though. The problem I had was actually a story problem, that being the abrupt ending, as though they just ran out of ideas. Also, like the first volume, the second volume has a strange, non-linear art style that is sometimes a little too wild and experimental. Few outside the fans of the series will find anything worth reading here. In fact, most who pick it up will no doubt leave with the impression that it was one of the worst manga they had ever seen. That being said, I can't recommend it to anyone but fans of the series, or possibly fans of Evangelion. Or for anyone who enjoys experimentation, because here is the ultimate experiment, and a good one at that.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is crazy!!!, July 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: FLCL, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
This is the second volume of the manga version of the amazing OAV series "FLCL" by Gainax (The Secret of Blue Water, Evangelion, His and Her Circumstances). The manga can't reach the peaks of the anime, but I think it should be read by everyone who loved the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alternate FLCL Universe, April 23, 2009
By
This review is from: FLCL Volume 2 (v. 2) (Paperback)
I was a little skeptical at first. I didn't want to buy a book that was essentially the same thing as FLCL - the anime, only with non-moving pictures and a slightly reworded script.

That's not what this is.
The events that take place in the manga are similar, but there are a ton of things that are altered. It's odd, hard to follow, and strangely enough- it does provide a little bit more insight into what's happening in the anime, even though the minor events depicted are different.

If you're a fan of the anime and you want to immerse yourself in that universe again, absolutely pick this up. The art style is still quirky great and changes a bit here and there- the characters are the same ones you love, and it feels like FLCL- the alternate story.

5.0 out of 5 stars NICE!, January 4, 2006
This review is from: FLCL, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
FLOOLY COOLY! FLCL! FLOOLY COOLY! FLCL! FLOOLY COOLY! FLCL! WOW! What a great two book series! By far the hardest to follow manga I've read, but definately the funniest. Great Stuff. If your new 2 reading manga then maybe you should see the anime first (very bright but slightly less hard to follow). Some parts seem to skip around, so my advice is to just keep reading OR flip ahead of the confusing part and read that, then go back to the confusing part and put both togeather.
(If this is confuing just read the book). Overall great ending and funny but CONFUSING plot. Nice!

ok some of you anime nerds come here and critisize the manga because it wasn't like the anime. hello. wake up. it's called artistic differences. take battle royale for example the movie and the book were extremely different but did i hate the movie because everything in the book didn't happen exactly, no. to tell you the truth im really glad its not like the anime. why would i want to buy something that i have already seen? but some of you out there buy stuff just to waste money. if your smart you will pick this up and keep and open mind about it. understand a story is never set in stone and new and different takes are nice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfit for anyone to read, November 23, 2003

If you're considering buying this because you saw the series and want more of the same good stuff, don't bother. Not only was the art bad, but they seem to have tried to compress every episode of the series into one uber-story with no sense of pacing or cohesive plot. Furthermore, and this is the worst in my opinion, they RUINED the characters! Haruko is no longer a charismatic wildchild but now just a sleazy con-artist with the worst sense of humor this side of the Prime Meridian. Mamimi is shunted off to the side and Ninamori floats around with the thing from ep. 3 the whole book. And, I don't mean to spoil this for you, but Haruko actually shacks up with Naota's dad and Naota really actually kills him. Which leads to the one funny joke in the book, but still! Our hero is now a patricidal jerk with no remorse? And Haruko is a whore?

Anyway, in short, if I could return this book for a full refund and still burn it in effigy, I would.
