Product Description

E4 Thermal Imaging Camera with MSX

The new FLIR E4 thermal camera is designed to enhance the electrical, mechanical and building diagnostics of users across key industries and professions. The FLIR E4 is an affordable solution that can help professional users track down electrical and mechanical overheating, air leaks, moisture ingress, missing insulation, and a host of other issues that thermal imagers can detect and quantify.

Other Features

Featuring a 4,800 (80 x 60) pixel IR resolution, a 20 degrees C to 250 degrees C temperature range, and ±2 percent or 2 degrees C accuracy, the FLIR E4 features a compact, rugged and user-friendly design, a vivid 3" color LCD display, wide-angle autofocus lens, intuitive camera controls, and an on-board 640x480-pixel digital camera.

MSX Imaging Technology

The E4 also provides FLIR's exclusive MSX (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging) technology, which uses visible details from digital camera photos to create sharper IR images. Along with delivering a much clearer thermal picture overall, MSX makes it much easier to recognize the location of heat issues without obscuring or compromising the integrity of the original thermal scene. MSX is ideal for creating an all-in-one thermal image that clearly illustrates the location of emerging or existing issues, and the bundled FLIR Tools software makes it simple to import, analyze, and incorporate images into easy-to-understand reports to help provide convincing evidence for repairs.

What's in the Box

Li-Ion rechargeable battery, power supply, USB cable, hard case, and FLIR Tools software for PC and Mac OS, and user manual.

Warranty

The new FLIR E4 is covered under an industry-leading 10-5-2 warranty, which provides an extended 10-year warranty on the IR detector, 5 years' protection on field-replaceable batteries, and 2 years' of coverage on parts and labor.

I've coveted a thermal camera for a long time but the price was simply out of reach and certainly not justifiable as home-user/hobbyist. A couple of days ago I came across a detailed review and discussion of the E4 and its capabilities on a website. I immediately knew that this had to be the Christmas present to myself this year. Of course, not being able to wait I had to play with it and it clearly holds what it promises and then some. The thermal/visual fusion feature is incredibly useful and I quickly found a couple of insulation issues in our older house. The sensitivity really surprised me too. I'm able to see residual heat images of footprints on the wood floor for several seconds.

The only negative I found is that they really, really should have used a regular USB connector on the camera instead of the micro USB connector. The micro USB connector is flimsy and the thick rubber cover flap causes torque on the connector when the cable is plugged in for charging. There clearly would have been sufficient space for a regular USB connector in the case. I am surprised this passed the design review and testing of such an otherwise very ruggedly designed tool.

I ordered my unit on June 23rd (very early AM) for next day delivery. My Unit came with firmware 1.22, calibrated late April 2014, All TIConfig mods applied fast and without issue, confirmed thermal images now at 320 x 240! Works great, uses a single cell Li-ion cell in it's battery so you should be able to refurbish the cell in several years if you want. Ergonomics are great, weight is great, really this doesn't get any better. Hard case it comes with with is fantastic, it has foam cut-outs for everything, including accessories that you can buy later (like the independent battery charger and a spare battery). Best thing I've yet seen, a case that takes what comes in the box and the most commonly purchased accessories.

There is however a few things that buyers need to be aware of:

1. Thermal Imagers are supposed to need periodic calibration, how often and the real need is based on usage and expectations. FLIR says you need it every year, this is likely untrue and a ploy to get more money because FLIR designed the units to require FLIR to calibrate them and there is no field or third party calibration (at this time). From what I've read it seems with light use it's anywhere from 2-3 years or perhaps longer. What happens if you don't get it is that spot and temps are inaccurate. Do you care? Maybe not, if the goal of the imager is to highlight hot spots and show you a colored thermal overlay of surfaces and how they compare, that will still work, I'm told the differences still hold true in the image. it's just that the entire scale skews or slides in some way, making actual accurate temp reading an issue. From what I've gleamed as a new E4 owner, if you can live with ~ 5 - 10 Degree F of inaccuracy then you don't care about getting it calibrated.

Yes, it's true. I am an engineer and a scientist. I studied the theory. I did the calculations. I know the emissivity of cotton and the temperature of methane. But now I can confirm my theory with SCIENCE. It IS possible to see a fart on a thermal camera.

Within 5 minutes I found huge air leaks in my house where cold air was leaking in between the first and second floors and filling the air cavities between joists with cold air. They show up as cold lines 14.5" wide running across the first floor ceiling. I found gaps where cold air is leaking in, a built-in bookcase full of cold air from the outside, a door that is not quite closed and leaks like a sieve, recessed lighting that has a few units that are not insulated properly in the attic, the flue on the fireplace is leaking. I could go on and on. This was just the first 5 minutes. The image resolution is not like a regular camera but I have absolutely no problem at all seeing clearly and instantly identifying what I'm looking at. I should have bought one of these years ago. It would have paid for itself many times over by now. Awesome!

I bought this camera to modify and it has been well worth the money!

I'm a general contractor and have used it for locating leaks on roofing (water was getting down to the soffit), locating water damaged areas in drywall, finding insulation deficiencies in walls and finding nails/screws and studs on siding/walls. I also used it to discover that the brakes on one of my vehicle's wheels were not functioning, because the disc was not hot compared to the other wheels, after driving for 20 min. I've also used it hunting feral cats, watching deer and coyotes at night, etc... Very handy to find what the dog is barking at. I can easily see deer at 100 yards at night, but haven't tried farther distances. Please remember that my camera is modded to an E8 equivalent, so some of the things I use it for would be impossible to do with a stock E4, like spotting objects at long distances because the 60x80 stock resolution would be too grainy.

It also comes with an impressive WATERPROOF carrying case (there is an o-ring around the perimeter of the case). It will survive being thrown in the truck with other tools landing on it!

If I hadn't modded the camera, my rating would definitely be lower, but after successfully modding it to an E8 equivalent, I'm very pleased with it! BTW my camera was purchased March 26, is the E4 1.1L model and came with the 1.22.0 software version (which I successfully modded).

I did call FLIR and ask a technician in the repair dept.
