I just received my third Flowbee. I have used this product for almost 18 years. It has worked great and I have saved myself a ton of money. I am also picky about how my hair is cut. My chief complaint is how cheaply they are built now. I have all three flowbees side by side. The earliest model is black and built like a tank. It was made in the "good ole" US of A. The second one has a yellow head with the word Flowbee on it. It still works well but over time the blades get dull and the spacers break fairly easily. The parts apparently were made elsewhere but it was assembled in this country. The latest version came recently in the mail. What a disappointment! It still has a yellow head but there is no writing on it. Everything about it is cheap! Even the cardboard box it came in is thinner and less sturdy. The covering on the handle is shrunk-wrapped plastic. It is made entirely in China. Avoid this model if possible. Buy the second model that comes in a box without a picture on it if it is available. Hopefully the manufacturer will read this message and think about returning the quality to this otherwise fine and innovative product.

To the not-so-observant person below, this is a PRODUCT review, not a retailer review.

After about 14 years and being dropped a few times, it finally died. I think one of the kids knocked if off the counter, otherwise it may still be working fine. Now I have to buy another.

It's virtually impossible to really screw up a haircut with it. Just be patient and go over your head about 3 times to make sure you didn't miss any spots. You'll still need clippers to trim the sideburns and back of the neck. Also - very important. Wash your hair just before cutting and make sure it's 100% dry. Clean and dry is very important.

I have 3 boys and myself and over the years I couldn't begin to figure out how much money I've saved over the years, not to mention the convenience. I can cut all of our hair in about an hour anytime I want. Need a touchup? No problem, only takes a minute.

It does require a strong vacuum to work well. When I used the houshold vac, I ALWAYS changed the bag before cutting hair.

The FLOWBEE vac works well, but is loud and has some of the stupidest design features I've ever seen. The power cord comes out the bottom which prevents the unit from standing on it's feet. How in the world can you design a product, then be dense enough to put the power cord in a place that makes if fall over?!?

Even though I hate the FLOWBEE vacuum, I still recommend it. It works well and is so compact that it's very convenient.

I would have given it 5 stars except that it's loud, the vacuum design defies logic, and the spacers are a bit on the fragile side.

Word to the wise - Order a set of replacement spacers with the unit. It gives you more length flexibility and you will eventually break one or two, even if it takes a few years to do so.

To sum up - let them laugh. It really is a great product that is overall durable and works well. I was looking at the Robocut as a possible replacement because I understand it's quieter, but after reading it's reviews, I'm sticking with the FLOWBEE.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe This Thing Works!, December 9, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Flowbee Haircutting System (Kitchen)
OK, I'll admit it: I'm a priss regarding hair. My husband has been wanting a FlowBee for *years*, citing his displeasure at having to go to *my* salon (all female). We live in a small town, so good hair cuts are hard to come by!

I kept telling him "No way. Please don't get a FlowBee." I had visions of him hacking up his hair (I thought his scissor attempts were a preview of what he'd do with a FlowBee)--or looking like Moe from the 3 Stooges or other nightmare scenario. And, of course, see him ending up at the hair salon to fix his mess...

Well, we ordered the FlowBee on December 3rd, and it came today--Dec. 6th. I knew my husband was anxious to use it, even though it was a Christmas present. I encouraged him to try it out, even though it wasn't Christmas.

I've just come from upstairs, where he finished his first FlowBee haircut. I am *totally* bowled over that his haircut looks as good as, or better, than salon cuts. I can't believe he achieved a layered affect in the back! I busted out laughing because I was so surprised!

Right now, there is a loud whine coming from upstairs (yes, this baby isn't quiet considering it's hooked up to your vacuum), because I asked my husband to cut our 6 year old son's hair. (I almost can't believe this is happening...)

I teased my husband for *years* because he wanted a FlowBee. He said "This year, I want one for Christmas."

I have to say, I am very pleased with this purchase. If he cuts his hair every month, as well as our son's, the FlowBee will be saving us at *least* $25 a month. This means that the FlowBee will pay for itself in *two* months. Amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eleven years of haircuts for two..., February 16, 2006
This review is from: Flowbee Haircutting System (Kitchen)
...and finally something inside gave up the ghost this morning, so we've immediately ordered another one. Sure, our friends ridicule us (although they admire our haircuts), but think of the money we've saved over all these years! The best part is getting a haircut in about ten minutes, whenever you want one. And though it's maybe not the best haircut I've ever had, I never want to wear a pillowcase for a month afterward, which happened frequently after my favorite hairdresser retired fifteen years ago. My husband, who hates both waiting for anything and being fussed over and messed with, loves being able to cut his own hair, and for him it takes about five minutes. You do want a powerful vacuum cleaner, and clean the filter first for best results. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A flowbee believer, January 2, 2007
By
Soccer Mom (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
My husband always wanted a flowbee, and I got it for him last Christmas as a gag gift. However, the Flowbee is FABULOUS! The flowbee does an amazing job--it is loud, but cheap, quick (5 minutes), clean (no hair on the neck, clothes or floor) and the haircuts looks great! It is especially good for baby-fine hair when every little cut shows. It is even and neat appearing. We usually use the style that is longer on top, then clipped closer around the ears. Only rarely do we touch up with scissors. We have used it dry or on damp hair. So, after a while, I (mom) started to wonder--why not use the flowbee for me, too? I wanted to save money and the hassle of gong to a salon and the uncertainty of what I might get. I saw a picture in a magazine of a touseled style and the haircutting directions said 2.5 inches on top, 2 inches on back and sides. With trepidation, we tried it and I have the best and cutest haircut I have had in a decade--fast, free and cute, too! I think it is best for short and for thinner hair, but who knows. I liked it so much that I wrote my first review on Amazon about the Flowbee. Try it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all, October 8, 2005
This review is from: Flowbee Haircutting System (Kitchen)
I just bought this 2 months ago after running across it on ebay. I've seen the commercial for it of course but never paid too much attention to that one, I actually laughed at it before

So I decided to buy it and hope for the best. The first haircut I was nervous, but it did a marvelous job. You have to learn which adaptor works for what part of the hair and what length it cuts at, but I got my haircut for less time than I would have driven to a salon and sat to wait.

I've since used it one more time, and still did a good job. This time I had to supplement with finishing touches with a scissor and razor (for the fuzz that grows in the back of the neck and the extra length on sideburns and ear).

Keep in mind I'm a guy with average to long medium curly hair. I wouldnt know how it would perform on womens hair or hair that is too curly. If youre a guy with straight or medium curly hair, I definitely think you won't be disappointed

5.0 out of 5 stars Great item for busy moms - save money on the kids!, January 10, 2005

I bought a Flowbee when my oldest son was about 3 years old, hoping to save money on haircuts for him. Little kids don't care about having a hip 'do', so why not? It worked great and gave him a standard layered cut, there are different attachments for different lengths. All you have to do is trim up the edges with scissors or a hair clipper/shaver, which is pretty easy to master after the first few times.

I'm currently without one - it got lost in my last move. But I'm seriously considering getting another because my youngest is now 3 years old and he's very wiggly during haircuts. The Flowbee is also great for kid cuts because you don't risk messing up when they move - the attachment ensures an even cut with no mistakes. It's also nice to know that the vacuum can't jab your little one like sharp scissors can. The only problem is my husband makes fun of it and refuses to have his hair 'vacuumed', even though he gets his hair done in a basic layered style. So there's definitely a stigma to overcome for some people.

I have tried it on several other people (adults) and they all enjoyed it - the vacuum creates a nice breezy effect that feels good. I used it on a couple of men who had scalp problems that caused them embarrassment at the salon and they loved it. One of them even bought his own so he could avoid going to the salon and being humiliated by uppity stylists about his scalp. So if you are more concerned about saving money and don't have a problem with the concept then this is the product for you. It could also be helpful for people who feel uncomfortable going to a salon and want a do-it-yourself option that can give professional looking results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved thousands., January 2, 2005
This review is from: Flowbee Haircutting System (Kitchen)
I've been using one for 7 years and I love saving the $15 for every haircut. One of the best things about it is not having to suffer through bad haircuts anymore. Many bad memories of having to take my baseball cap with me because I never knew what kind of hackjob someone might do on me. It kicks a**. Curly hair might be difficult unless you have an industrial strength vacuum. It's really easy to use. Don't use it while drunk though. You might end up looking like Super Cuts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, easy, reliable and cheap!, July 28, 2006
This review is from: Flowbee Haircutting System (Kitchen)
For years we made fun of the Flowbee - who wouldn't? Then my brother, who is a handsome and successful lawyer, proudly admitted that he had used one for years. He's too busy to schedule a haircut, but he can just whip out the Flowbee that he keeps in his office closet, and cut his hair anytime. Looks great! I figured if it was good enough for him, I could try it. I absolutely despise setting aside time for a haircut.

My husband and I have been using it for years now, and have saved hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Every year or two, I get an urge to get a professional cut, and I am more likely to hate it than love it. With the Flowbee, I'll be happy every time. The only drawback to it is that my kids think it's hilarious to tell people that their parents use a Flowbee. And, well, I guess it is. But our hair looks good!

Incidentally, the dogs don't like it much, because the vacuum is loud. But wow - to trim 3 dogs, without one hair getting on me? That's amazing. I don't much like it when they poo in my yard, so we're even.

5.0 out of 5 stars WORTH EVERY CENT, September 19, 2004
This review is from: Flowbee Haircutting System (Kitchen)
Thought about buying one several times, but didn't take the plunge until my hairdresser (for 10 years) left town and I couldn't face the thought of trying to find someone else I liked as much. Besides, a cut and blow dry cost me $30 a month, and my husband $15. My first attempts were a little nerve racking, I just didn't have a clue, BUT I kept notes on what I did, which areas I cut to which length. Within three months, I was comfortable, and I haven't looked back. It's been four years now, so we've saved over $2,000 in stylist/hairdresser fees. My advice: 1) be cautious at first, so you don't keep cutting a little more here and a little more there; 2) make notes of what you do, so when you come up with the perfect cut for you, you can recreate it; 3) use a vacuum that has very good suction, it makes a lot of difference (we have a Hoover Wind Tunnel); and 4) remember that hair grows, if you mess it up, it's only temporary.
