Book Description

January 28, 1988
This book contains the most complete history of the South Vietnamese Air Force that surviving records and accounts can convey. In many ways, this is an American story; since VNAF was organized, trained, equipped, and attained its maximum strength under the tutelage of the US military. In view of numbers of aircraft, the South Vietnamese Air Force emerged as the fourth largest Air Force in the world-behind Communist China, the United States, and the Soviet Union. This is not a political history of the Vietnam War; rather it is the story of the transition of the VNAF from an under-trained and ill-equipped French Air Force auxiliary unit to a size during its 20-year life span, so large that it was almost incapable of sustaining itself with sufficient numbers of trained personnel and support materials. This is an up-dated version of the book by this same name and author published in 1988, which now features an abundance of color photographs and new incites of the air forces role in that war that have settled with time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book about what was once the world's fourth largest air force, January 16, 2006
Originally published in 1988, this is a well-researched historical account of the (South) Vietnamese Air Force or VNAF. Mikesh served as a senior curator at the Smithonian Air Museum as well as an air liaison officer with the VNAF. From the days of the French occupation to the last planes shot down by the North Vietnamese Army on April 29, 1975, he takes readers through a fascinating formation of an allied air force. Perhaps the only other similar effort is the building of the Imperial Iranian Air Force which disappeared in 1979. As the son of a former VNAF pilot, I am greatly appreciative of Mikesh's work. There are dozens of rarely seen photographs of the VNAF in action. This is a MUST HAVE book for aviation buffs and readers who want to understand the complexities of the war in Vietnam.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book to have, January 18, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Good book, lots of details, and some never published photos. The book feels a bit clique-ish, like it is written with a very narrow scope. It contains a lot insider details that would be meaningful to a very specific audience, namely former VNAF or former South Vietnamese military audience. All the same it is a good book to have if you are interested in the VNAF. I do not care for the cover, feels too much like box art for a Skyraider scale model kit.
