5.0 out of 5 stars Best book about what was once the world's fourth largest air force
Originally published in 1988, this is a well-researched historical account of the (South) Vietnamese Air Force or VNAF. Mikesh served as a senior curator at the Smithonian Air Museum as well as an air liaison officer with the VNAF. From the days of the French occupation to the last planes shot down by the North Vietnamese Army on April 29, 1975, he takes readers through a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book to have
Good book, lots of details, and some never published photos. The book feels a bit clique-ish, like it is written with a very narrow scope. It contains a lot insider details that would be meaningful to a very specific audience, namely former VNAF or former South Vietnamese military audience. All the same it is a good book to have if you are interested in the VNAF. I do not...

Originally published in 1988, this is a well-researched historical account of the (South) Vietnamese Air Force or VNAF. Mikesh served as a senior curator at the Smithonian Air Museum as well as an air liaison officer with the VNAF. From the days of the French occupation to the last planes shot down by the North Vietnamese Army on April 29, 1975, he takes readers through a fascinating formation of an allied air force. Perhaps the only other similar effort is the building of the Imperial Iranian Air Force which disappeared in 1979. As the son of a former VNAF pilot, I am greatly appreciative of Mikesh's work. There are dozens of rarely seen photographs of the VNAF in action. This is a MUST HAVE book for aviation buffs and readers who want to understand the complexities of the war in Vietnam.
