I was genuinely surprised by the quality of this arm. I have worked with many of the more expensive arms over the years on rented camera packages, but for my own messing around I couldn't justify the price of the "pro" models. If I were to knit-pick at it the ball joints and rotating sections don't move nearly as smoothly as the expensive ones when the tension is released. However that being said it holds rock solid when the tension is on, which to me is far more important than it moving smoothly.

When I got it, it looked nice and felt sturdy. However, in the field with a Lilliput monitor of only a pound or two, it struggled to hold it. I would lock it in only to watch it buckle and fall multiple times. After thirty minutes, the ball joint that was screwed in fell into pieces, with a washer falling out and the entire unit breaking off of it. 10 pound limit? More like 10 ounces, although reading these other reviews is puzzling to me, b/c I seem to be in the minority.

Totally agree with the 2 earlier feedback. I needed an articulating arm to mount my 7" LCD monitor to my Sony VG10 and this $24 item solves my problem of where and how to mount it. I'm still looking for adapters to mount this arm on the rods itself and not the coldshoe for fear of tearing off the latter. It really locks in place when you tighten the knob which is what's important here especially when you have your equipment shoulder mounted and moving. I'm particularly impressed with its solid metal built, something I did not really expect for a measly $24.

There's nothing negative I can say about it. I'd recommend this product to anyone that just purchased a video monitor....an absolute must!

Before I bought this arm, I used a very similar one I got off eBay that cost about the same price. The movement on that arm was rigid - too much friction and metal grinding against metal in the ball joints. That one broke several times (having to put it back together took 30 minutes of meticulous work trying to force the tiny pieces back into alignment) and wasn't reliable enough for any practical use in the field.

I had my doubts about buying another articulating arm at this price, but the reviews on this one seemed pretty good, and they were right. This arm is just the opposite of the other one I had - nice smooth movement, works just the way it should. I highly recommend this one. Holds up my 7" monitor and battery with no issues whatsoever. My only advice to people is to make sure that you use a strong attachment point to your rig - I use a 1/4" attachment point that's joined across both rails so that it wouldn't rotate, with a little bit of threadlock to prevent it from loosening.

I'm using this for a 7" monitor and it works better than the price implies. I don't use the hotshoe mount, but it just unscrews and you can mount it anywhere on your rig.

I've used some $100+ arms, and they are definitely better than this. But whether or not they're worth the extra money is up to you. If you have the patience to deal with this arm, you can definitely save a lot of money. I've used it with my SmallHD DP4, which with the EVF is a little on the heavy side, but as long you crank it down tight (both the knuckle on the arm and the screws at both ends) you'll be fine.

UPDATE 09 JAN 13
I just wrapped a feature film, using this arm for my SmallHD DP4-EVF and two more for the Chromo LED lights I just bought, and I have been consistently impressed. If you can get the arm tight enough, it will stay locked for quite a while. I could pick up my entire 5D rig (clocks in right at around 12-lbs.) and this arm would not move.
At some point I would love a Transvideo arm, but until I have the $150 I need for that, I can see myself using this arm consistently.

Love these magic arms. Single knob unlocks both ball ends and the knuckle in the middle. The knuckle has serrated teeth that interlock when the knob is tightened. This assures the arm will not sag. Both ball ends have 1/4-20 threaded ends. The hot shoe adapter is fine. These are well made units and handy for holding small video monitors, GoPro cameras (if you buy the GoPro 1/4-20 tripod adapter) or other accessories.

I use one to hold an iPhone on top of the Nikon D800 lens while it's running the Teleprompter+ app. Works like a charm. You'd swear the talent is looking right into the lens. The magic arm attaches securely to the camera's hot shoe and the other end holds a spring loaded iPhone holder normally used in a car. Some simple adapting and I have a super portable teleprompter that the talent can read from 6-7 feet indoors or out.

I gave this only 3 stars not for lack of functionality, but rather because I don't ever use it. I guess I thought I needed something I didn't need, or maybe I will find it useful in the future if I can even find it! I'm sure it does the job well, and writing this review might actually spark the desire to look for it and put it to use for sake of the fact that I paid for it. Although it may be impractical to use with some cameras in certain situations such as a DSLR mounted to a fly cam which is already difficult to balance without the weight of awkwardly placed accessories, maybe I'll be surprised to find it useful somewhere. I know there is use for this thing one way or another! Just make sure it's what you need before you buy it. I don't remember this being nearly $40.00. and I wouldn't pay more than $10 or 15.
