Editorial Reviews

Years ago, before MP3 players and video games, people used to get together with family and friends to make music. Gathered around the fireplace or sitting on the front porch, people of all ages would pull out instruments and sing traditional songs that had been passed from generation to generation. This is the very essence of folk music, and its legacy continues on Folk Playground.

In the 1950s and 60s, many traditional folk songs found renewed life and meaning for a new generation of performers and audiences. Many of the people who sing on Folk Playground grew up listening to these songs, and as adults, have continued the folk music tradition by performing their own versions of classic songs and by writing new ones.

Erib Bibb, Elizabeth Mitchell, Jon Gailmor, Victor Johnson and Trout Fishing in America have devoted their careers to performing folk songs for children and adults. While several musicians on Folk Playground have taken different routes to the folk scene. Dan Zanes, Laurie Berkner, Justin Roberts and Brady Rymer traveled rock and roll roads before taking a turn down the path of kids’ and folk music. Zoe Lewis has flown all over the world before landing in Massachusetts. Still others are even more unlikely wanderers onto the scene: Retro pioneer Leon Redbone reaches back into time for his version of "Polly WollyDoodle" and Michelle Shocked pulls a few strings to bring us her cover of "Got No Strings".

To help ensure that the folk legacy continues for many generations to come, Putumayo is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Folk Playground to the Fund for Folk Culture, in support of their dedication to the dynamic practice and conservation of folk and traditional arts and culture in the United States.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!, November 3, 2007
This review is from: FOLK PLAYGROUND (Audio CD)
The other day, I bought two CDs for my 1 year old. The first was by the Wiggles. The second one was this CD (Folk Playground). Thank goodness I bought the second one. Now I can play accessible and fun music for my daughter and stay sane at the same time! The lyrics are playful and witty, with some artists adding some twists to some old favorites (Victor Johnson - "This Old Man", Laurie Berkner - "Froggie Went a-Courtin'"). The music is mature, pleasant, and of course, folksy. The Zoe Lewis tune, "Sheep" is worthy of special mention...a pure delight. But there's not a single clunker on this CD...for the kids or the parents. Are there any more like this out there?

5.0 out of 5 stars good for all ages, March 7, 2007

My 17 month old son and I both love this album! His favorites include Got No Strings (which he recognizes as the "cuckoo" song), his buddy Dan Zanes with Hop Up Ladies, and the Crawdad song. Mommy's favorite is the Sheep song, which she keeps finding herself humming (and, all right, dancing to) at work! After heavy rotation in the car, it still hasn't shown its wear, and has opened us up to many wonderful new artists. This is a winner!
