4.0 out of 5 stars God is in the details.
This is a fantastic setting in which an experienced gamemaster can set a campaign. The level of detail is rich, yet not unwieldy. No, I wouldn't play this the same day I bought it, but when reading it, the stories almost wrote themselves. 3.0 out of 5 stars Serves as a starting point, but you'll need to buy more.
The Forgotten Realms boxed set is OK, though it only gives an overview of the realms, you would have to buy the City of Splendors, The Shining South, The Unaproachable East, Maztica, The Hordelands, and Oriental Adventures to make full use of it, it does give a relatively detailed description of Shadowdale and the dales so it is a good starting point. (If you have read...

No, I wouldn't play this the same day I bought it, but when reading it, the stories almost wrote themselves. It dispenses with all the nerdware fantasy puns and treats the world seriously, unlike previous incarnations I have read in my 15 years+ experience with these games. I get a real sense of the flavour of each region and town, as well as an excellent roster of characters to help drive the plot. It is the tool for a gamemaster who also has a life. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word, AWESOME, June 1, 2001
This review is from: FORGOTTEN REALMS CAMPAIGN (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 2nd Edition) (Toy)
I've like some of the FR stuff in the past, but this is the best it's ever been.

A TRUE powergamer at heart, this book blew me away because I read it past the character changes and new game material.

This book has all the characters you've read about, and they're no longer munchkins. A fairly complete history (finally!). It has all the geography instead of little bits and pieces. Complete maps. An explanation for most obscure things. Adventure hooks for almost every geographical area. God descriptions, organizations, etc... Some spells, character classes, prestidge classes (the new kits).

It truly feels alive! It's like having all the old boxed sets, the F&A series, and the FR Adventures book all rolled into one!

The best D&D product that I have bought in a loooooong time (12+ years) -- ranks up there with the 3e PHB, but without the typos (and ranger!).

I only wish they would have detailed Karatur, Maztica, and Al-Qadim in enough detail to adventure there once in a while (if they only gave as much as they did to each of the Dalelands to each of those I'd be happy: an NPC or two, a couple cities, and a couple adventure hooks as to why the PCs would go there...)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best and nothing but the best!!!, September 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: FORGOTTEN REALMS CAMPAIGN (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 2nd Edition) (Toy)
This boxed set is by far the best I have ever perchased. I fell in love with the realms due to the literary genious of a Mr. R.A. Salatore and I have been playing there ever since, I apreciated the gallery of famous characters be they villians or heros that was included in one of the books, as well as explainations of all of the good aligned organizations such as the Harpers or the Seven Sisters, as well as the evil aligned organizations such as the Zhentarim , and the Cult of the Dragon. All in all it is the best buy of the year if you do not already own it.

5.0 out of 5 stars AD&D Fantasy=Forgotten Realms, June 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: FORGOTTEN REALMS CAMPAIGN (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 2nd Edition) (Toy)
This boxed set is amazing, filled with everything that the Dungeon Master and players need to play in the Forgotten Realms setting. It is the definitive of fantasy for AD&D, and AD&D is the best fantasy gaming system. You can't get much better then that. It is a great purchase for novices as well as experienced Dungeon Masters. The descriptions set a rock-solid base for campaigns which you can only build on.

5.0 out of 5 stars lots of depth, April 2, 2000
By
This review is from: FORGOTTEN REALMS CAMPAIGN (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 2nd Edition) (Toy)
All the amazing cultures, realms, and people are practically as numerous and varied as the real world during the Middle Ages. A "shared world", it has at least a little of everything found in high fantasy, myths, and AD&D sourcebooks.

There's lots of adventure here;imagine bloodthirsty sauhaugin legions coming out of the sea on a warm night to murder among the great cities of god-kings and strange wizardry in the moonlight, the coolest subterranean world ever thought up, and overall very open ended.

If there is any thing to complain about, it's that there isn't any main plot line for the world. Most of the conflicts are local. One little thing that bothers me is the overuse of the letter "u" in plural nouns.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most detailed campaign setting - and the best one., April 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: FORGOTTEN REALMS CAMPAIGN (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 2nd Edition) (Toy)
The setting is by far the most detailed setting, and this all adds up to the richest most flavoursome setting in the AD&D world. If characters start in Shadowdale (a booklet provided) then the DM has a lot of well organised information accessable in the quickest time. I ran the first adventure the day I purchased the boxed set. There is enough material in the set to run many gaming sessions. I lost myself in the beauty of the setting, and the realism of the characters. I might name my first born son Elminster, and daugher Shandril.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten Realms FOREVER!, July 4, 2004

Ed Greenwood and Jeff Grubb-Need I say more?
This is the second Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting following in the tradition of providing vital information concerning the magical world of Toril. Ranging from background history, to city and social descriptions, to important people and characters, to the respective gods and pantheons, to adventure hooks and encounter tables, to magical items and artifacts, to new spells and monsters, to maps and specialty classes, this accessory has it all and more!
For the FR enthusiast, like myself, I also strongly recommend the previous edition, which by the way is also in boxed set form (it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it), as well as the Third Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which even though is quite expensive, is still very useful to all FR fans, in providing an update of events. In short, if you don't have it, GET IT! It is so worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! This is an awesome setting, January 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: FORGOTTEN REALMS CAMPAIGN (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, 2nd Edition) (Toy)
I have always played in my own world, but it was slightly vague, and lacked what this boxed set has. I canabolized this into my campaign, but this can also be great by itself. Anyone looking to get into the Forgotten Realms setting or looking for good book should get this.
