Hosted by renowned pianist Phil Moore (who performs as well), the episodes from the Ad Lib Series included on this disc also feature notable jazz musicians such as pianists Larry Nash and Wray Downes, as well as a rhythm section consisting of bassist John Heard and drummer Harold Jones.
The Ad Lib Series, now available on DVD for the first time, is a collection of 46 concert TV programs presenting the best Jazz, Pop and Blues artists showcasing their skills with a Jazz flair. Seen on TV internationally, Ad Lib (filmed in 1980) was the first musical television series recorded in Stereo. Each DVD features 2 episodes of the acclaimed Ad Lib Series.
Freda Payne grew up with sister Scherrie Payne of the Supremes, listening to intoxicating jazz singers like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. She moved to New York City to begin her career, working with a Who's Who of entertainers such as Quincy Jones, Lionel Hampton, Sammy Davis Jr. and Pearl Bailey. When she released Band of Gold, the song immediately shot to the top of the charts, transforming Freda from an unknown talent into an international Pop celebrity virtually overnight.
With a career full of success, accolades and fame, Freda Payne will forever be in the publics consciousness from the memory of her smash hit. However, her supreme talent and genuine musicality have made her a mainstay in the music scene.
