A Must-Have Fretless Instructional, August 25, 2009
This review is from: FRETLESS BASS HAL LEONARD BASS METHOD STYLISTIC SUPPLEMENT BK/CD (Paperback)
This is the book for fretless fans, and it has a wealth of information for all ability levels.
I found out about this book and knew I had to get my hands on it. I have other books in the Hal Leonard style series, including the Funk Bass one that was also written by Chris Kringel. I really liked his funk book, and knew I had to try this one.
In short, it did not disappoint! It's a fantastic book on so many aspects of fretless bass. Kringel is a clear teacher, and he doesn't assume you already know everything about bass or playing fretless. His explanations are easy to understand, and he moves quickly, which will keep boredom away from advanced players.
The CD that comes with this book is amazing, too, because there are audio examples of so many of the songs and exercises used in the book. Yes, other books have accompaniment CDs, but it is especially valuable with the fretless in hearing just what the player is doing and as a way to check intonation.
So if you want clear and concise instruction with tons of great audio examples, this is definitely a book you'll enjoy and use.

Fretless Bass, July 9, 2011
This review is from: FRETLESS BASS HAL LEONARD BASS METHOD STYLISTIC SUPPLEMENT BK/CD (Paperback)
I had been away from fretless bass for a few years and decided to try to find a more detailed method book than ones I had previously used. This definitely fills the bill. It covers basic theory, technique, history of the instrument, thoughtful hints to improve intonation and get a great sound, and exercises and songs which build in complexity while taking you through a wide range of musical styles. The accompanying CD is pretty well done and enables you to hear the bass part clearly in the context of the arrangement. I have noticed a few errors in the transcription on "Hocus Pocus" -- the tab line seems to be correct but there are a couple of wrong notes in the standard music notation. However, it is much better in terms of overall content and presentation than other fretless method books I've used, I thoroughly enjoy it, and I feel it will definitely make me a better player.
