Solid Reference Guide, January 9, 2010
This review is from: FRUSTRATION FREE TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT: Proven Techniques to Thrive as a Manager (Paperback)
As an engineer-turned-manager, it was really nice to see a book specifically written for me. No stuffy MBA stuff, just real advice which obviously came from real-world experience.
It's also nice to see a management book for knowledge workers as opposed to blue-collar workers. Smart people in a creative field have different problems and options, so traditional "how to lead" stuff never rang true for me.
I like that the book is organized as "Have problem X? Here's 5 solutions." This makes it readable the first time as well as an easy reference guide later on.
I do wish there were more examples to go along with the tips. The tips are good and clear, but sometimes a story about how it was applied in a real situation helps you to understand how to apply it yourself.

Absolute must read for new managers...., December 30, 2009
This review is from: FRUSTRATION FREE TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT: Proven Techniques to Thrive as a Manager (Paperback)
There are the books you read, and then there are the books that change your life. We can all look back on the books that have shaped our perspective on politics, religion, money and love. And, this is a great book on management.
It is a fantastic read for the first time managers as well as the more experienced.
Author's advices and suggestions are simply excellent! Written in a very open, friendly and accesible language, this is the book on how to be a successful manager and how to get things done. The book is written in a very positive tone - looking to help the manager to remain positive as well as motivate, develop and get the best out of people. I very much like how the frustrations and solutions are numbered - perfect for my technical mind.
I suspect this is the kind of book I will keep re-reading every so often.

What Every Engineering Manager should own, January 22, 2010
This review is from: FRUSTRATION FREE TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT: Proven Techniques to Thrive as a Manager (Paperback)
Boy, my only regret is that this book didn't come out sooner. I know several engineering managers who could have benefited from Mr. Bolander. While not the only book on engineering management in my shelf, it surely is an important one. Showing the major causes of problems in an engineering environment, solutions and strategies are explained in a simple no-nonsense manor.
A recommended reading for those who either manage or think management is easy.
