4.0 out of 5 stars You have no choice but to buy this book..., July 8, 2008
This review is from: FTCE Educational Media Specialist Pk-12 (Paperback)
I had no choice but to buy this book. It was the only current study guide I could find for the FTCE - Media Studies. Unfortunately many of the questions that were on the test were nowhere mentioned in this book. They were actually common sense questions that you'd know only if you had experience as a Media Specialist. Since I did not, I had to often guess or think really hard that by the time the test was over I felt like I had been through brain surgery. I had to go back and review my answers 2-3 times on the questions that I knew for a fact I did not see in this book. The book itself was very repetitive which is a good thing and a bad thing. Good because if reviews the information you learned as you move along and bad because you have to learn same information but in many different contexts which could get confusing. On the plus side also, the book is condensed and not as huge and frightening as some other FTCE tests. I think the pass rate on this exam is about 70% so if you have decent common sense, general knowledge and you read and understand this book, you have a good chance. I would not waste time memorizing each book and its author as well as all the book winners unless you have loads of time to study ( I had about 2 weeks). Luckily, I passed the test and the book did help but be prepared be shocked by some parts of the test even if you've memorized this book cover to cover

3.0 out of 5 stars This Won't Be the Only Book You Need To Pass!, August 4, 2008

This is a good guidebook for studying to pass the FTCE exam, but you will need to study other books to pass the exam as well. I studied this book from cover to cover and the exam asks other questions that are not covered in this guidebook. If you have never been a Media Specialist, it will be hard to pass the exam without having the experience of the job. I was told by a seasoned Specialist that even those in the position have a hard time passing the exam. You will need to study books like Information Power and research books from the library on the actual job itself. I have not been able to pass it yet, and I have studied multiple books. I think this guidebook it definitely needed, but do not count on it as the only book to pass the exam!

3.0 out of 5 stars A great study guide, but a terrible test!, April 20, 2008

This book is an excellent study guide and gives you everything you need to pass the educational media test. On the flip side, the test is flawed with a ton of mistake. When taking the test, please check #4, #18, #28 and a few others. There are problems like the word "except" or "not" was left out which changes the answer. Also, twice in the test there are four similar questions, but when you get to the answers, the question and answer has changed. Like I said this is a study guide, not a great test. So please get the Educational Media Specialist Pk-12 test preparation from USF. There is a test in their packet which is almost perfect.
