Covers Material Well, But Full of Typos,
By Math Teach (Miami, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: FTCE Middle Grades Math 5-9 (XAM FTCE) (Paperback)
I have not studied math in over 15 years. This book helped me prepare for my FTCE Test, and I passed. The book is very thorough in covering the material that you will be tested for. It is unfortunate that this is the ONLY prep book that I could find on this subject (Math 5-9), because it is so expensive and has sooooo many typos.
I am lucky to have a good friend in California who is a scientist and is a natural teacher to help me with the material that I did not remember anymore. Every other page in this book contains a typo, many times the typo is in crucial parts of formulas, equations and other explanations, making the re-learning of some material impossible without the aide of someone well-versed in mathematics, as my friend helped me. Once he identified the erroneous information contained in the typos, he was able to explain these math concepts to me. Once all the information was clear, I found this book very helpful in preparing me for the test. The practice test in the book is about 5 times harder than the real test. I feel that helped me breeze through the test. I was pleasantly surprised on the test day that they provided us with calculators, too.

Editing Issue,
By
This review is from: FTCE Middle Grades Math 5-9 (XAM FTCE) (Paperback)
The only issue that I had with this book as well as one other that I have purchased in the XAM series is that there seems to be a lack of editing. In both books, there seemed to be either typos, extra spaces, etc. I also found one question with answers that were incorrect and another situation in which duplicate answers were given for the same question.

Good if you already know the material,
This review is from: FTCE Middle Grades Math 5-9 (XAM FTCE) (Paperback)
I took the FTCE Middle Grades Math 5-9 test and passed my first attempt in March 2008. This was the only book I purchased to review for the test. Just for reference, I will say that I have a degree that was very technical with a large amount of higher level math, so I would consider myself more advanced mathematically than many others.
This book, like all XAM books, has very poor editing, formatting, and many typos. The only thing really useful in the book is the practice exam. It has questions that are mostly representative of the actual exam. If you do not already know the content, this book is not a good book to learn the concepts. Most of the front of the book (where they 'teach' the concepts) is very limited with poor examples. Many of the practice questions are not even taught in the front of the book. I would not use this book to try to learn how to do the problems. Buy this book if you just need another practice test to work on.

This Study Guide is a Big Help.,
This review is from: FTCE Middle Grades Math 5-9 (XAM FTCE) (Paperback)
The Florida Department of Education's study guide provides a listing of the skills you must know in order to pass the FTCE Middle Grades Math Test. This book covers all of the of those skills and is more specific for the areas that make up a larger % of the test questions (geometry and algebra). This book was my only study guide and I passed the test with no problem.

Careless Typos but still the book is a good concise source,

Book is good preparation for exam study, yet there are many careless typos throughout this edition. Book didn't cover pre-calculus, box-whisker, graphing of quadradic equations.

TYPOS AND INCORRECT,
By
This review is from: FTCE Middle Grades Math 5-9 (XAM FTCE) (Paperback)
This book is filled with typos and incorrect material. The explanations are brief and provide no help. The questions also have a section listed so that if you are confused you can go back to that section and look up how to solve the problem. Problem is, the descriptions are so incomplete or unrelated to the question that they are never any help. There is also only one practice exam. It is actually so upsetting that this book was actually published.
These lady clearly took advantage of the fact that is is the ONLY book out there for FTCE middle grades math.

This book is average at best. The book contains a considerable amount of typo errors. But I contacted the manufacture and they are replacing the copy I purchased for free with the latest edition. According to the manufacture the latest edition does not have the errors as this edition. My advice, wait and buy the next edition.

I used this resource along with several others to prepare for the Middle Grades Math 5 - 9 test in March of 08. I passed the test and I would recommend the XAM resource as a study guide; however, I would caution you to not use this text alone to study for the test. There are hundreds of typos and simply wrong answers in this book. I used this book along with the REA, FTCE Mathematics 6 - 12 to study for the test. I took all of the applicable questions from both texts and wrote them on note cards. I worked out each question before I put the answer on the card. I would say that nearly 25% of the XAM's answers were incorrect. I do think that the sample questions in the XAM book were very similar to the actual questions on the test that I took, so I would recommend the XAM as a study guide for the test--just be careful.

You might want to get another one...,
By kim (Florida) - See all my reviews

According to this book Martinique was a colony of India and the Inuit populated the Mid Atlantic region of the USA. The book offers more explanation on certain subjects in respectively skills 9.4 and 14.11, which do not exsist in the book. The math section contained more than one mistake (not typo, but mistake - I had a Math teacher check this...)
These are the things I happen to know, so I know they are mistakes. Problem is that I needed this book to study because I don't know a lot of this stuff, so I really don't know if the rest of the material in the book is correct or not! In any case, I am calling the publisher for a refund. |
