Test taken March 09--Don't buy this book---WAIT updated info,
This review is from: FTCE Social Science 6-12 (FTCE Teacher Certification Test Prep) (Paperback)
I bought this book and reviewed it till the pages were like toilet paper. I just took the test and did not pass. It was the computer test, but I was really disappointed with this review guide. It has about 10% of what you need to know. For some reason, the actual test is almost a polar opposite of this book. I'm disappointed that I put my trust in this exam study guide. I enjoyed reading the text and taking the tests in the book, but I'm disappointed in the correlation with the actual test(almost 90% of the test is not covered in the book). I will not buy another REA Book. It's all about results and this book is out in left field. Maybe, I just got the gotcha test. If so I will update this after I take the test again. Good luck with this exam. I am going to get a book in each area from local schools. Then try again.UPDATE: I also went out and bought the XAM book for SS 6-12. The two books together worked, I passed. I must mention that the first failure was only by one, yes one, question. Today, I passed the exam and once again thought there was no hope for success. I must say that this book in comparison to the XAM book is much easier to read and overall a better product. Therefore, I am changing the 1 star to 3 stars based on the actual scores. There is a practice set of question on line from the FLDOE that was extremely helpful with 54 questions (internet download for $5.00 in PDF format). After two study guide books and the on line study guide I passed. I found this exam to be extremely tough. Don't take this exam lightly.

I passed the exam with this review book but I'm not sure I'd recommend it. If you compare this book to the review guide you can print off from the FTCE website, the competencies and everything coincide but the REA book does not go in depth enough with each competency. There were questions on the exam that were not covered by REA. If you use this book I would supplement it either with some other study guide or text books from either college or high school social studies classes and definitely the $5 guide from the FTCE website. The practice exams on the CD are helpful for practicing timing, but the questions are worded differently than the actual exam.

I purchased this book after being overconfident and thinking I could pass the test without any studying. Well, turns out I missed the cut by one question.I purchased this book because it had the software. After taking the real test, the questions are NOTHING like what is on the test, not even worded the same. There are some things in the book that are good, but can be picked up reading a history book or another test prep book. I also ran into the question telling me that Georgia does not border Florida, only Alabama does. This question makes me lose a lot of confidence in the accuracy of the software and is making me increasingly worried about the upcoming test. Save your money... I purchased the XAM book and will review that later. Someone could really make a lot of money by writing a decent test prep book for the SS 6-12 FTCE. The test is extremely challenging and does invoke a lot of world history and economics questions. Brush up on world history and the US involvements in the world wars and you should have a shot. Good luck to all that are taking the test!

Disorganized, but thats a positive,
This review is from: FTCE Social Science 6-12 (FTCE Teacher Certification Test Prep) (Paperback)
I passed. I don't necessarily attribute that all to this book. It did help me review concepts and terms that I had forgotten about since my school years. No, it does not have everything, but I did not expect it to. This is not a book for you to learn Social Science 6-12, that you should have done while in school (if you were abroad, then you need to find something else), this is a book to prepare you for the test.It was disorganized, but I think that could be a good thing when reviewing. The actual tested curriculum can be obtained from the FTCE website, there you can use this book with other resources to catch up on what you have forgotten. The test itself, well, it was just as disorganized and weird as this book, so for that I give it 5 stars. I was not surprised by anything on test day.

After taking the sample exams w/testware provided. I scored 94% on first sample test and 90% on the 2nd. Who would think I could fail the real exam just hours later? You only need 67% to pass the exam. I have multiple certifications and this is the first exam I have ever failed and I have a degree in Sociology. There is NOTHING from this study guide that is on the actual test. Don't waste your [...] bucks- it is a joke. I spent the better part of 2 weeks reviewing this to fail the real exam. I have great test-taking skills and felt confident going in but didn't recognize a single question. Do Not Buy!!!!

Terrible Review Book,

The content of this book barely scratched the surface of the depth of knowledge necessary for this exam. The book skims over all the details during the review section, and the questions in the practice tests are completely unlike the actual test questions. I studied this book in depth before testing, and still felt unprepared going into the test. Luckily, I passed my exam, but I do not think this study guide is to thank.

lots of typos, decent info,
This review is from: FTCE Social Science 6-12 (FTCE Teacher Certification Test Prep) (Paperback)
This book had a number of ridiculous typos that were extremely distracting. In a number of cases, the answers were noted differently in the answer/explanation section. I lost a lot of confidence in the book and its publishers. I did pass the test after studying the material, though I'm not sure how much to attribute to the book's content. The geography portion of my test in particular was MUCH harder than the geography in the book.

I am only half way through using this book and the cd review test and am already finding blaring mistakes. Example - Question #11 - Tom you are a Florida professor??? Since when is Georgia not a state bordering Florida??? Will update this as I go on, but I am posting this now considering many are taking this certification exam in this tough education market.
