Product Description

Platform: PC Download | Edition: Standard

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

****New Content Available****
The free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition, is available now! Content additions include: new alien race, events, weapons, playable ships, drones, and more! Also adds additional musical tracks by Ben Prunty, and events by Tom Jubert and guest writer Chris Avellone.

If you already own FTL it should update the new content automatically. Advanced Edition is included free for anyone who purchases the game from this point forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Space Adventure! June 6, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Edition:Standard
FTL is a gem of a game, where you command a spaceship facing difficult odds in making it across the galaxy and defeating your foes.

Your ship starts out as little more than a lightly armed freighter, but as you progress you recruit a crew and start adding upgrades. This makes for a unique playthrough each time, as during one session you might become a cloaked raider that strikes from the shadows, or a tech heavy ship that sends drones to fight for you, or just a classic battlecruiser that wins by slugging it out.

The crews of your ship are fun to build, as there is a diverse cast that begins with generic humans, but lets you gain rockmen who excel at fighting fires, mantis men that can chop through intruders, and even space slugs who can detect where enemies lurk. Your crew gains experience so you get quite attached, and it is a tragedy to lose a veteran to an uncontrolled hull breach.

This is a difficult game, as you cannot save your progress when playing, but I found that makes the game more tense and provides higher stakes. An example of this is when you encounter an abandoned space station with the option to send your crew to search. If you could save, this would be without risk as you could simply reload if the outcome was undesirable. But without that crutch, you must carefully consider if sending your crew to salvage is worth the scrap metal, or if the odds of a space spider attack are too great.

This has been one of my favorite indie games in recent years, and is highly recommended to anyone seeking a great space experience!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game play, not much story or graphics July 1, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Edition:Standard
If you're looking for a game with great graphics and an in depth story that is easily beatable, this is not your game, do not waste your money or time reading further. However, if you're like me and just want a fun and challenging (nearly impossible to win every game, even on easy) game to play and don't care about story or graphics read on.

FTL is a vary challenging and fun space based game. It's hard to pin down an exact genre for this game, but I would say it's part real time part turn based strategy/action and it reminded me of a text based (this game is not text based) space trading game I had for my Palm Pilot back in the day.

Pros
The world is always randomly generated
Many different events and the vast majority have results that aren't randomly chosen if you have the right crew/equipment
There's plenty to unlock and explore
High level of replayability
Player has the ability to pause at anytime during battle to plan the next set of moves or try to play all real time for the extra challenge

Cons
To unlock all ships requires an amazing sequence of random events to occur in the same game, making it very challenging
I actually think this game is a touch too hard, I have yet to beat it on Normal but I haven't really tried beating it on Normal yet I was too busy unlocking all the ships
Each game lasts too long if you want to have an actual shot at beating it

Overall this is an excellent game that is easily worth $5-$10.

On a final note if you're into achievements on Steam or are interested in their Trading card game at all get the Steam version. Other than that I would get the non-Steam version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy fun game! January 27, 2014
Platform for Display:PC Download| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
This game is very hard to finish but it's designed to be that way. That's the whole point! If you are looking for the satisfaction of completing your "quest" then look elsewhere. An interview with one of the developers states that the success rate is set for 10%. That's what makes this game so much fun. It's random and difficult. It's a mix of skill and pure luck.

The interface is very simple to learn, a few minutes is all you need to get it down. The excitement comes in the complexity of dealing with all the subsystems in your ship, the crew and dealing with the enemy. Thank god for the pause button, things get hairy pretty fast and without a way to stop the action and get your bearings, this game would be a nightmare.

This is not an eye candy type of game, there aren't any flashy graphics, snazzy audio tracks, mind blowing cut scenes. It's all about the game play folks and that is the raison d'etre for this game. Engaging and addictive game play. Try it! Once you get the hang of it I bet you won't play just once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to Learn. Hard to Master. July 22, 2014

Great little game. This is NOT about the graphics or story. It IS all about the strategy and tactical decisions of a starship commander. As there is really no way to reload after a botched adventure, your decisions really mean something. Be careful. Be bold. Be carefully bold. But think before you leap because one wrong move with your crew or your ship could turn things ugly in a hurry. I've played games where I thought I had a tough crew and a tougher ship - only to be annihilated by a boneheaded decision on my part (and perhaps some good old fashioned bad luck). This one will seriously tear into your free time. You've been warned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game but not as flexible as I had hoped January 18, 2014
Platform for Display:PC Download| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
Had hoped to find a game with more flexibility in terms of strategy. There *are* multiple ways to succeed, but it is hard to succeed (particularly in harder difficulties) without basing your strategy on a slow and methodical search and destroy. Balancing in other ways by providing an incentive to reach the end quickly, or alternate ways to beat boss (via cunning or subterfuge or pure stealth).

Great game. Challenging and fun yet irritating due to the challenge. I recommend taking it nice and slow and remember what options you choose every time.
