5.0 out of 5 stars PRAISE FOR GLEN E. FRIEDMAN, May 15, 1997
By A Customer
"It's odd how many of the photographs are familiar. Five minutes with the book and I'm counting the number of shots that were on my bedroom wall growing up." -NEW YORK PRESS

"Many of these pictures are recognized as the subjects' definitive portraits, and it's a revelation to find they were all created by one man... Friedman is in awe of the loudest loud young mouths of the last fifteen years. He respects their impact immensely and he's committed to passing inspiration around." -WARP MAGAZINE

"Fuck You Heroes & Fuck You Too have all star casts that'll make any coffee table look dope." -SLAP MAGAZINE

"If Glen E. Friedman's pictures of seminal punk rockers, daredevil skateboarders and ground- breaking Def Jam artists were set to a soundtrack, it would have to be "Rebel Without A Pause". They, like the photographer, are energetic, gritty and awash with old school cool... If you're into grunge, hip-hop, or skateboarding now, this is the photo album of your roots." -SOURCE MAGAZINE

"The lineup of defiant faces and quotations he's assembled is a challenge to all up-and-comers." -REQUEST MAGAZINE

"This book is an important social document... `People need to see these pictures; they need to be reminded of what they were like when they were young.' And that according to Friedman is the point: `Who needs to grow up? All you do is lose your integrity, lost your ideals, lose your drive.'" -VIBE MAGAZINE

"Honesty, unfettered by dogma and convention, can only survive outside of limitations, Fuck You Heroes and Fuck You Too are pictorial documentation of that wide open world... Seeing these edgy, exciting images in one package is an unforgettable experience... FYH & FYT are not for those who think punk, rap or skating is a fashion statement. It's only for those who had no choice but to grow up different, real and true." -RIP MAGAZINE

"Up close and intense... It gets to the nut, then cracks it." -SPIN MAGAZINE

"In Friedman's images--bird-flipping skaters, snarling punks and posing-hard rappers alike-- the overarching message appears to be more than, simply, fuck you. It is instead fuck you with a subtext: I reject you outright. Reject you and all of your stupid, petty beliefs and limitations; I am against you and that for which you stand, so high and mighty. In the shorthand for , the sub-language of the moving body: the finger. I don't need to talk to you. Fuck you. Think for yourself." -NEW YORK PRESS

"For nearly two decades, Glen E. Friedman's noted photo work has served as a historical log on the seminal suburban/urban subculture. From his earliest days as a 13-year old skateboarder photographing top mid-to-late 70's skate icons like Jay Adams and Tony Alva, to his documentation of the burgeoning early-80's hard-core punk scene (captured in the `82 cult soft cover classic My Rules), to his high profile work as a renowned hip-hop photographer (most notably, the legendary album jackets for Ice T's Power and Public Enemy's Yo, Bum Rush The Show), Friedman has kept his finger on the pulse--not for fame and fortune but as a vital lifeline." -PAPER MAGAZINE

"Revealing, naturalistic and deserving of attention... Friedman's approach, his dedication and the quality of his photography should all be applauded." -BLUR MAGAZINE

"In twenty years these collections will be considered time capsules, an encyclopedia from an important decade and a half of modern mayhem and change in popular culture. What makes FYH & FYT fly is the intensity and honesty that looks you in the eye from Friedman's 1/250th second perspective." -JUXTAPOZ MAGAZINE

"Friedman has trained his lens on groups like Minor Threat, Black Flag, Fugazi, the Beastie Boys and other punk pioneers with the same skills with which he's frozen hip-hop pilgrims like L.L. Cool J and Chuck D. in honest, intimate moments of power and integrity. Friedman's camera seems to have been part of the action, so when Friedman's there, you're there. And Friedman has literally been there throughout his career. -LA VILLAGE VIEW

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard Core Skateboarding, Punk, and Hip-Hop - the classics!, June 14, 2005
By
Apple Eyes (Dogtown, California) - See all my reviews
I had to write this review because no other Amazon customers have given
this book the review it deserves (other than the press reviews). This
book is unbelievable, if for nothing else, just for the sheer volume of
Hardcore Punk, Hardcore Hip Hop legends, Hardcore
Skateboarding (much Dogtown), and MORE, all in here. Friedman's previous
book was much more selective, he says this is his "scrapbook" of
leftovers but he's really downplaying it, it's much much more in several
ways. This one contains a way larger cast of characters and is much more
relaxed in it's presentation. I think it's cool for that. Only downfall
is that it's a softcover, but for $20 I can't really complain. There's
over 300 pictures in this 168 page book and it just looks amazing, so
much energy comes off the pages. It's a perfect companion to F*** YOU
HEROES with this 2nd edition black cover, I love it.

Lots of amazing obscure PUNK shots, of the Bad Brains, Black Flag, Dead
Kennedy's, Misfits, TSOL, Wierdos, Minutemen, Minor Threat, Husker Du,
D.O.A., Social Distortion, Reagan Youth, Circle Jerks, the Make-Up,
Suicidal Tendencies, Cramps, Big Boys, Ramones, GERMS, the
Faith, Necros, Descendents, Adolescents, Stimulators, Discharge, the
Damned, Murphy's Law, UK Subs, Angelic Upstarts, S.S. Decontrol, 999,
BuzzCocks, tons of Fugazi.

Classic incredible Hip-Hop shots of Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool Jay,
Ice-T, South Central Cartel, Busy Bee, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Ultra
Magnetic MC's, KRS-1, Kurtis Blow, King Tee, PUBLIC ENEMY, A Tribe
Called Quest, Fat Boys, Eric B.& Rakim, even U.T.F.O.!

The skate shots are of all the originators in DogTown (Tony Alva, Jay
Adams, Shogo Kubo, Jim Muir, Paul Constantineau, and Stacy Peralta -
Dogtown skate photos not in any of his other books - most notably of Jay
Adams at the DogBowl.) Some great East Coast shots too, and classic
early stuff of folks like Duane Peters, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain,

Gator, Blender, Ray "Bones", "Wally", "Playboy" Bobby Piercy, Steve
Alba, Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, Tom Groholski, Mike McGill, Eddie Elgura,
Christian Hosoi, and more.

Some of the other obscure interesting shots include portraits of Rick
Rubin, Russell Simmons and C.R.Stecyk. Music stuff of the DeadBoys-Stiv
Bators, Go-Go's, Sting of the Police, Billy Idol when still in
Generation-X, AC/DC, Iggy Pop, Johnny Thunders, and killer shots of
Slayer.

Believe it or not there's more I didn't even mention. You will be
pleasantly surprised by this book. It packs a great punch of classic
shots that you won't find by any other photographer anywhere.

EXCELLENT!
