5.0 out of 5 stars We had a lot of fun with it!
Shrinky Dinks Alien Invasion

My 11-yr-old received this for Christmas and hadn't opened it so on a recent break from school, my 7-yr-old and I opened it and made a lot of the shrinky dinks. The first bunch we baked, we baked too long and they curled and wouldn't uncurl. I think part of the problem was the cookie sheet that I used. It was old and I wasn't sure...

1.0 out of 5 stars Stinky Dinks
This is horrible! Not what I remembered as a kid.
The plastic cracks as you try and cut the pieces out, then they curl up as
you bake them, unable to uncurl despite the directions saying it's no big deal. The pieces come out so small!
Don't buy this! It is more frustrating and disappointing!

It was old and I wasn't sure if it was the type you're not supposed to use. Anyway, the second time around, I baked them on the tinfoil only for just 10 seconds or less (yes, it was that quick) and they came out perfectly. The magic light comes with a battery and worked great! My son helped cut out some of the shrinky dinks and didn't have any problems with them breaking. We had so much fun doing these that my son wants to order more! Highly recommended for a fun afternoon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shrinky Dink fun but have a sore hand..., April 11, 2010

My son and I really liked spending a rainy afternoon making alien shrinky dinks. The only thing that wasn't so great was that unlike the other ones made by this company, none of the patterns were pre-cut, meaning that I had to cut out all except the easy planets. They were pretty intricate with lots of twists and turns, so it got pretty cumbersome and "owwie". Colour pencils are provided, but we took out our bigger pack of them to add to our colour repertoire. My son really liked the extras so that we could do many different things with them after they came out of the oven.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!, December 28, 2011

Nice product. The designs are cute. The colored pencils that are included are of high quality. The tiny hole punch worked very well. It wasn't obvious to me that the flash wand needed 1 AA battery, as it already had some tab batteries. Once I figured that out, the wand lit nicely. We spent two hours coloring the patterns the day after Christmas. Watching them shrink and then using the metal rings to hang them on the pen, notebook and key chain that are included rounded out a very enjoyable afternoon together.

Regarding some of the other negative reviews:

We followed the detailed directions to bake them on a preheated, single layer cookie sheet, covered in tinfoil that had been very lightly dusted with baby powder. We watched them carefully, and only baked them for 1 minute. Once they stopped moving, and laid flat we immediately removed them. They did not curl up and stick to themselves, nor did they stick to the pan.

I had forgotten from my own childhood just how small they become. I feel that that's part of the fun.

If your child isn't too adept with scissors, or doesn't have the patience to cut carefully, consider buying a different shrinky dink set. For example, the fairy tree kit has patterns that are already cut out. The Amazon product descriptions will state "Shapes are preprinted and precut -- no tracing or cutting required." If the patterns are not precut, as in this Alien one, you will see the patterns referred to as "sheets".

Bought this kit for my 8 and 11 year old, very cute, fun objects to color and of course the best part is watching them shrink, every one has turned out perfect, you have to watch them shrink in the oven until they are completely done, they curl up and then when you thinks it's all over they uncurl and flatten out. Don't assume 3 minutes and then take them out. Make sure to punch the hole with the hole punch that comes with the kit before shrinking. We have had so much with this kit that I ordered more. Great fun!!!

My 7 year old son had so much fun with this project, more than i remembered having when I was a kid! Saved it from Christmas for a snow day. He loved watching through the oven door with the light on. Definately recommend using the baby powder which it suggets.
