Destined for the garbage
on April 3, 2012
First, I must say that I am pretty surprised at the number of high reviews.
I was not a fan of this item the first time my daughter was given it as a gift, and less of a fan of it now that she has used a second set.
There are three butterflies, large and two "medium", plus a few to attach to those metal, bendy hair clips. And, frankly, not NEAR enough jewels for the surface area. (Of course, the jewels are the first things that the girls will want to stick to their butterflies, they will be gone in a skinny minute; the box cover appears to show 25-30 jewels and that is probably about all you get.)
You get 3 or 4 tubes of glitter glue, which the kids invariably glob all over the butterfly, and of course since the butterflies are made of some sort of mesh/nylon type material the glue goes right through. Giving that situation some thought, I wonder if providing the kids with some Q-tips to spread the glue might improve that situation. I think that is doubtful, though, since I had a tough time getting the little jewels to stick to the mini butterfly I myself was decorating with plenty of glue. I was trying to figure out how it was supposed to stick to the clip, since there was a metal bump on the underside of it, when I realized there were double sided sticky dots to attach it to the clip. I thought the clip looked a little unfinished when I stuck the butterfly on it. Just not like something I'd bother keeping track of.
My daughter is very crafty, and she is always creating something. Of course, when this is the case, you have to pick and choose what gets hung up/preserved/tossed. Sadly, the 3 butterflies from the first set ended up in the trash, and unfortunately these will too. Had I got my hands on the box early enough, I would have returned it to JoAnn Fabrics in exchange for almost *anything* else.
I think for $15 plus you could get a very nice American Girl craft kit or Shrinky Dinks instead, if you are looking for a gift. You'd even be better off buying 15 crafty items from the dollar store and tossing them in a pail, in my opinion.
