The Faber Castell E-motion pencil is a little pricy, but worth it. I first encountered it in Germany about ten years ago and have been a fan ever since. The first one had a plastic (yellow) barrel and the rest have been maple wood. But ultimately the looks don't matter that much, it is the action that matters. I like the 1.4mm lead. It never ever breaks and is fine for doing a little math now and then or underlining a paper or making marginal notes. Most of my writing is on the computer but the rewriting is often done with this fine pencil. I feel totally naked without out mine and recommend them without reservation.

The leads for these pencils are readily available from on line sources. It is the unique 1.4mm lead that makes this such a great pencil. The lead wont break, lasts forever and wont tear through thin paper. Perfect for newspaper crossword puzzles.

These pencils work fantastically for sketching. The barrel's design is short and fat and fits comfortably in anyone's hand for long periods of time. The 1.4 mm B lead is both soft and yet strong enough to make quick gesturely sketches without breakage. The erasers also last, as they are fat in shape and are of high quality. A warning to artists out there; once you get this pencil you'll never want to go back to a traditional wooden or mechanical pencil ever again.

I like my pencil. The warm feel of wood - The strong, nearly break-free lead - The cool shape and design, all work for me. It has a well designed pocket clip. You can press on the top to flex it open so it slips in your pocket more easily. All in all, it's beautiful thing. (Keep you hands on it, don't lay it down during a meeting or it could walk home with someone else - it's that good looking ;-) )

My only caution - the shape, while really cool and is what drew me to the pencil in the first place (pun intended), my wife can't / won't use it. The shape of the barrel just doesn't work for her fingers. I bought it for her to do Sunday Times Crosswords and she demurred - I had to buy her another Faber-Castell that has a straight wooden barrel and a dual pen / pencil that works better for her smaller hands and fingers.

Try it before you buy it or be prepared to send it back if you don't find the grip and shape comfortable.

I bought this pencil by mistake at a store's going out of business sale. I thought it was a pen when I bought it because it didn't have a label and was taped tightly in a plastic case. After I discovered that it was a pencil I had to find the lead because it didn't come with any. Once I found the lead at an office supply store this pencil became my favorite pencil of all time. I used it when giving screening tests at school. It didn't need to be sharpened, the lead didn't break and it didn't cut the paper. Now that I am retired I use it at my volunteer job which requires the use of pencils instead of pens. I have not used up the original peice of lead that I started with.....It lasts forever!! I really like the fact that it has room for extra leads so I won't have to search for the refill when the lead is finally used up. It is the only pencil I will use!!

I love this pencil. I have owned three of them now. Keep losing them. I always need to have one on me. Use it every day. This pencil goes from wood shop to office without missing a beat. Pretty. Functional. Feels great in your hand. If you are a pencil snob like me you need this pencil in your pocket. It just makes life a little easier to understand.

I've used this pencil before and loved it. I suspect it walked home with someone else after a meeting (echoing an earlier review) & outside amazon have had a hard time replacing it.

The one I got functioned beautifully for six or seven weeks. It had all the virtues that people noted below. The 1.4mm lead is terrific and the barrel is a pleasure to hold. However, after about a month and a half (too late to return) it stopped holding lead. The lead simply slipped out of the barrel whenever I tried to write with it, independent of the lead control at the top of the pen. I added another 1.4mm lead to it and had the same problem.

I'd gone a few years with my earlier version without such a problem and have concluded provisionally that I just got a bad unit. I like these pencils enough to order another one and give it a try but wanted to post this caution in case you too run into difficulties.

I have two of these pencils, each with a different wood. While I do like the pencils and use them frequently, they are a smidge fatter than I really prefer, as is the lead itself. All that notwithstanding, I do prefer these mechanical-type pencils to any others out there (that I've tried, anyway), mainly because I prefer to twist out the lead AND because the lead isn't super skinny. Replacement leads and eraser can be found online at exotic pen, pencil and paper shops, among others.
