This review is from: Fables in Slang (Audio CD)
Chicago-based power-popsters Post Office really outdid themselves with their second release, produced by dB's great Chris Stamey. The musicianship is strong (featuring new drummer Jeff Greaves and bassist Jerry Morrow), and Stephen Becker and Larry O'Dean write great songs that are fun to listen to over and over again. Highlights on the disc include Larry's "Going to Indiana," a song that could easily be a big hit, "Over Here," "Susan Faludi," and "Anhedonia," while Steve serves up "Awake Again" (which features a bridge that mixes the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus" with CSNY's "Our House"), "Semiprecious Stone" (the disc's best track), "Brain Damaged," and "End of the El." The one problem with the disc (although a minor complaint) is that everything after "End of the El" is anti-climatic, and the disc should have ended there. It's not that the three songs that follow are bad, it just feels like they don't belong - maybe that's why God created b-sides. Anyways, this disc is definitely worth picking up, especially if you're a fan of the genre. It also marks an end to a great band (who knows, maybe they'll reunite...) who deserved to be one of the best in the Chicago area and beyond. Larry and Steve are now working on their side projects (Larry - Me Decade, Steve - solo), and both are worth checking out, also. Jerry Morrow is now the basist for another GREAT Chicago band, Ten Ten, who's disc is available at cdbaby.
