Review

The book Fabric Dyer's Dictionary is a wonderful resource If you want even more information about dyeing fabric, you'll want to read Linda Johansen's Fabric Dyer's Dictionary (C&T Publishing, 2010, $23.95). This book is a fabulous resource for anyone who is considering dyeing fabric. It literally turns fabric dyeing into an art form. In addition to a wonderful introduction describing all of the basics-including precautions-it provides detailed step-by-step instructions. It also explains the techniques required to dye fabric to produce unusual results like ombre, layering and more. A complete source list is included for several types of dye. The book's color formulas are all yardage specific. Recipes for 900 different colors are given in quantities needed to dye 1 yard of fabric or 1/4 yard of fabric. This book presents a simple. straightforward approach to fabric dyeing that makes playing with color fun and exciting. (Threads Magazine )

This book is a fabric dyer's dream reference, containing dye recipes for over 900 colors. Johansen keeps the introduction chapter on the dyeing process straightforward and brief; the book's main focus is on creating countless different hues from only a few key dye colors. Novice dyers can start with basic gradations, such as a clear dark rainbow or muted light rainbow. Dyers with a bit more experience can try out, increasingly complex color progressions, such as those ranging from clear orange to clear blue, or muted green to clear red. Finally, readers can also apply their new dye color recipes to the more advanced techniques (such as twist and ombre dyeing) presented at the end. Whether you're an experienced or beginner fabric dyer, if you're looking for a concise and user-friendly guide to mixing your own hues, this book is for you. (Quilting Arts Magazine, June 1, 2010 )

A guide for creating 900+ specific colors and color ranges with cold-water Procion MX fiber reactive dyes. The book begins with a brief outline of precautions, tools, how to mix the dyes, and some general dye instructions, then moves right into the formulas for mixing colors. Chapters are broken down by colors and each chapter outlines how to dye clear and muted color, with ranges from dark to light, and complementary colors. (Notions, June 1, 2010 )

More About the Author

When Linda was seven years old, her mother sat her down at a treadle sewing machine and taught her how to sew. By the time she was in junior high school, she was making all her own clothes. She loves to stretch her creativity with every innovative fabric technique she can find, from dyeing, painting, and stamping, to making bowls and boxes. And as of this writing, she has created over 200 bowls! Linda teaches workshops on beginning, traditional, and contemporary quiltmaking; color and design; dyeing and stamping. Of course, her very popular classes on making fabric bowls and fabric boxes are always filled. Under the company name Johansen Dyeworks, Linda hand-dyes fabric, specializing in color gradations and variegated, one-of-a-kind pieces. This fabric, along with commissioned art quilts and fabric bowls and boxes, are sold through several shops around the Northwest. Although her two sons have grown up and left the nest, Linda still has the company of two border collie mix dogs. She and her husband live in Corvallis, Oregon. 5.0 out of 5 stars excellent reference book, May 3, 2010

This review is from: Fabric Dyer's Dictionary: 900+ Colors, Specialty Techiniques, The Only Dyeing Book You'll Ever Need! (Paperback)
This book is an excellent guide for creating specific colors and color ranges with procion mx fiber reactive dyes. The book begins with a very brief outline of precautions, tools, how to mix the dyes and some general dye instructions and then moves right into the formulas for mixing colors. Formulas are calculated for dyeing fat quarters in 1 quart bags or 1 yard pieces in 1 gallon bags so if you work in different sizes than that you'll need to adjust the formulas accordingly. Chapters are broken down by colors; yellows, oranges, reds, purples, blues, greens and blacks and each chapter outlines how to dye clear and muted colors with ranges from dark to light and complementary cross. There's also a chapter on dyeing rainbows in clear dark/light and muted dark/light as well as some information on specialty techniques such as dyeing obre, twisting, layering and pleating and dipping.

If you're working with cold water procion mx type fiber reactive dye and you want to be able to produce consistent color results then you'll find this book an invaluable reference.

especially if what you want is recipes for color, not an understanding of color as it applies to dyes. There is enough information about the process to get you started, but no discussion of the chemistry of dyeing that can help you move beyond recipes. And, there is no discussion of color theory and how it applies to using dyes. There are also gaps in the recipes- there are value gradations, and gradations between complementary colors, but nothing else. For my money, Joyce Mori's book is still the best resource to actually learn the process. The exercises she takes you through are more comprehensive, and she has more information about the process and the chemistry than any other beginner's text I've encountered. If you want a dye cookbook, this one will probably work fine for you. If you want to become a dyeing chef, get the Mori book, and Ann Johnston's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid reference, May 17, 2010
This review is from: Fabric Dyer's Dictionary: 900+ Colors, Specialty Techiniques, The Only Dyeing Book You'll Ever Need! (Paperback)
There are a lot of excellent books on fabric dyeing, and I wasn't sure about the need for yet another new title. After reading it, I was pleasantly surprised and can easily recommend it, especially to a newbie. The book is what the title says it is -- a fabric dyers dictionary with the recipes for some 900+ colors created using Procion MX dyes. The first chapter covers the basics. The meat of the book is color swatches and the recipes to make each color. All are made from some variation of three clear primaries, three muted primaries, three secondary colors, and a black. The recipes are for creating 1/4 yard or 1 yard pieces using zip lock baggies (with some math you can create more yardage). And while the use of baggies is not a new technique, it's a perfect way to get started and lends itself very well for creating an extensive palette of colors without the need for buckets and the like. The book concludes with a brief overview of some specialty techniques such as rope dyeing and painting with thickened dyes. If you're toying with the idea of learning to dye fabric, this book will not disappoint. It could be the only book some may need on the topic, but it's also a handy reference for those with more experience.
