Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

"The brain is a gland," states neurosurgeon Bergland in this popular review of brain research, past and present. He argues that if we are to understand the mind/brain, neuroscientists must accept this radical view of the brain as an endocrine organ "producing . . . and bathed in hormones." But the book is more than just a plea for a new approach. It is an entertaining but scholarly review of brain science from its ancient beginnings to the present, pointing out how incorrect approachesnerves are hollow tubes, four humors control behavior, brain activity is all electrical, etc.have persistently obstructed progress and understanding. An outspoken, authoritative statement, highly recommended to general science collections, that professionals will also find useful. George Adelman, formerly with Neurosciences Research Programs, MIT

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fabric of Mind, October 25, 2011

(REAL NAME)
I read this book first some fifteen plus years ago and have re-read the book several times since. Having come from a medical background myself and having worked in this area for over thirty five years I find Mr Berglands arguments very compelling. Many of the paradigms held by the many variants of the medical establishment over the past two thousand years have been fundamentally flawed simply because people were not prepared to question the established "truths" for a variety of reasons. If there is one lesson to learn from this book it is to question everything. I believe there are many lessons for readers in this book and for my money it is one of only four books that I could honestly say has shaped my thinking and professional preparedness to question the established paradigms that makes up medicine today in an industry that has many areas that must be questioned.
