Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The vast array of fabrics and decorative threads available today gives quilters and wearable-art designers many choices. Add the element of fabric stamping, and the design possibilities are almost limitless. A fabric stamp may be an elaborate commercial rubber stamp or a "found object" stamp like a carved pencil eraser or a stamp cut from an old inner tube. A prolific author and quilting teacher, Laury examines in depth the methods for stamping on fabric, including choosing fabrics, the process of printing, working with stamped letters, setting up all-over patterns, and other uses for stamps. She includes six learning projects and invaluable comparative charts of materials used in making stamps, as well as the paints and dyes most suitable for fabric stamping. A full-color gallery of fabric-stamping art accompanies the instructional material. A bibliography and resource lists round out this excellent introductory book. Enthusiastically recommended for all public libraries and textile collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Creative and Informative, July 27, 2004

I like this book most because it provides a wide variety of creative projects. The techniques also can transfer to mediums other than fabric. The one drawback is that some projects have better descriptions and instructions than others. The author provides a good description of the tools and materials necessary to do fabric stamping at the begining of the book, but the book does not give instructions for some steps that more experienced crafters might already know. Despite this drawback, I found the book to be inspiring. So, overall I think it is a good book, but those readers who are beginners might want to start with another book and come back to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars FOR MORE THAN JUST FABRICS, November 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fabric Stamping Handbook (Paperback)
As a mixed-media artist, there is a great appeal in learning ways to design my own materials that I use in small books, paintings, wall hangings and multi-media collages. Although this book seems aimed at those artists who prefer working with textiles, I have found solid advice on many aspects of relief printing, with stamps made from easy to locate materials, such as erasers, vegetables and self adhesive weatherstrip material. Other methods such as discharge, resist, and silkscreen printing are shown as ways to incorporate your stamped images. There is a wide range of applications of hand-created designs, from clothing, to home decor items, to correspondence to textile and mixed-media art. C & T Publishing gears its books toward quilt and fabric artists, but I believe this book is a valuable resource for any artist desiring to develop their skills in hand printing.
