Someone gave me Fabulisity for my birthday. I read it but didn't have any high expectations. Well, I'm happy to say that this book by Kimora Lee Simmons is funny, informative and really very interesting. Kimora, clearly is not the bubble headed, insignificant person that we thought she was.

2.0 out of 5 stars Still a fan...just not of the book!
I love hip-hop music and I love shopping, but as a woman gets older, she learns that it's just not cute to have "Bootylicious" on her butt or the name brand in 15 different spots on her shirt. This is why I like Baby Phat clothes, it's hip-hop, it's sporty, but it's classy. I have more Baby Phat jeans than necessary and a few shirts too! So when I heard about her book,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Still a fan...just not of the book!, July 9, 2006
This review is from: Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It (Hardcover)
I love hip-hop music and I love shopping, but as a woman gets older, she learns that it's just not cute to have "Bootylicious" on her butt or the name brand in 15 different spots on her shirt. This is why I like Baby Phat clothes, it's hip-hop, it's sporty, but it's classy. I have more Baby Phat jeans than necessary and a few shirts too! So when I heard about her book, I just knew I'd love it. But here's the problem...I feel the same way about Kimora Lee Simmons as I do about India Arie. When I went to see India Arie at the Taste of Chicago, she kept prancing around stage singing "I'm #1." In awards shows, India said things like "I always think I'm going to win..." As much as I'm a fan of her music, I'd never buy it because her ego is out of control. Reading this book made me feel the same way about Kimora. She kept on pointing out how she could do unprofessional things (wear stilettos to work, show up late, yell, talk over people, have modeling shows with people who are not wearing your clothes and front like it's Baby Phat) but coaxing her readers into doing the exact opposite. Every time she said something contradictory, she'd say "But I can do that, because I'm the boss" or "But look at me now!" After awhile, I was rolling my eyes and looking at my stove trying to figure out how to mail her a bucketload of humble pie. I respect women who are confident, but being vain is a complete turn-off. Halfway through the book, I gave up. Maybe it ended on a down-to-earth note, but I couldn't handle it anymore.
She didn't cover how she met Russel Simmons and how they helped each other in business; only stated that she likes to beat him economically. She didn't talk about how she went about picking her staff, only talked about how young they were. She didn't talk about how she chose her clothes, only dogged the clothes that Russell and Run chose. Her idea of showing feelings was talking about how she beat somebody up for knocking her Chanel purse out of her hands or not speaking to her when she was with her husband. It was really juvenile to me--I was waiting for her to tell me something deep. I felt like she was barking orders at me through the book and finally said "Forget it." I will continue to buy her clothes because I love them, but as for this book, nah, I just can't do it.

Someone gave me Fabulisity for my birthday. I read it but didn't have any high expectations. Well, I'm happy to say that this book by Kimora Lee Simmons is funny, informative and really very interesting. Kimora, clearly is not the bubble headed, insignificant person that we thought she was.

The book has excellent advice about money management (I'm not kidding), and tells the stone cold truth about the modeling and fashion industries. I'm not saying that I'd like Kimora if I met her or that I wouldn't be miserable working for her but I really enjoyed the book.

Now I must say that I would not give Fabulisity to a teenaged girl because of the language issues and the world view but it's fine for adults. Also, I have to point out that what Kimora calls being assertive would probably get you in a heap of trouble with your female co-workers in most jobs outside of New York City Other than that, Fabulosity is better than most of the self help books for young women on the market right now.

Congratulations to Mrs. Simmons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure, April 14, 2006
This review is from: Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It (Hardcover)
When this book first came out, I expected it to be a guide on how to look fabulous for every occasion. I was okay with that but not rushing out to get it or anything. Well I finally did get around to reading it and WOW!
This is good stuff--no lie! There are tons of reasons for people to hate on Kimora but you gotta give credit where credit is due. I can't imagine her spending a lot of time writing but yet every word in this book sounds like it's coming out of her mouth. And she's not spewing a whole lot of nonsense but yet some GREAT advice for young adults trying to make it BIG in this world. I love this book and I have recommended it to others. Would I work for Kimora? Heck no but I love her advice LOL!

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't usually write reviews but...this was an exceptional read, September 29, 2007
This review is from: Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It (Hardcover)
Before I read Fabulosity, I wasn't a big Kimora fan, but I have nothing but respect for her after reading this book. Yes, she talks a lot about fashion, and her extravagant lifestyle..and what else can you expect..Authors talk about what they know..and Kimora knows what it means to be fabulous. The people that complain about the book are dumb for expecting anything less than a woman talking about what she knows. But intertwined with her lavishness, the book was surprising down to earth! It wasnt some stuff old etiquette, how-to-do book that was filled with nonsense. She speaks like a diva, but its with genuine candor. How do I put this?..Its really a lifestyle manual...how to develop yourself as a goddess from the inside out...professionally and personally..Its a real book. However if you are not in the demographic she is addressing, you won't get it..and you will think the book is a waste, b/c you won't get it. This book is for the urban, chic, young woman who is a product of the hip hop culture but has the style and grace of high fashion(or even just the desire to be that)...if you are more comfortable with the non-urban, old world culture...THEN THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU..there are plenty of other books available that appeal to your demographic.
I'll admit, because of the negative reviews I read on here and elsewhere, I had very low expectations of "Fabulosity"..and even her flashy persona. People said, oh you can't apply what Kimora says in real life, she's just rambles on about her life and how great it is...That is not the case, AT ALL. You just have to know how to apply her principles to your own life, even if you aren't in the fashion industry. Its really just about learning how to know yourself, love yourself, carry yourself, etc. Oh and its about a state of mind too..If you feel like a glamorous lifestyle is out of your reach, and you have already made up your mind that you are content with mediocrity, then yeah the book will come off too flamboyant for you..but if you have an open mind, and you don't mind learning something from somebody who indeed has it all, this book will be a great asset. I borrowed this book from the library first, but after reading it, I have just purchased it so that I can refer to it whenever I need that extra "chutzpah" confidence booster. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

1.0 out of 5 stars Who is she kidding?, January 30, 2007
This review is from: Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It (Hardcover)
This is truly one of the worst wastes of paper i have ever read. Kimora just drones on and on about how rich, successful, and "fabulous" she is. She has a chapter on relationship advice...it wasn't long before she was in divorce court after writing this book. She constantly contradicts herself...for example, see through clothes are on her list of things never to wear. Then, on another page, she advises to buy nipple covers to wear under sheer tops. Her idea of advice is telling women how to go diamond shop[ping for their collection. Do you know any women with a diamond collection? i don't. Basically the whole point of her book is to show how rich she is and act like she made it from nothing when we all know the capital came from her filthy rich husband. It's impossible to respect someone who is constantly quoting Little Kim as a role model.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your $$$, January 4, 2007
This review is from: Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It (Hardcover)
As an avid reader, this was one of the worst books I've ever read in my entire life. Besides Kimora "barking" at the reader throughout the whole book, there really isn't much else to it. She goes on and on and on about how she beats her husband at business....over....and over....and over again! This book truly sucks. Please keep your money in your pocket, or buy Justin Timberlake's cd instead. It's much more enjoyable than this book; hands down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Empowering and Inspirational, February 27, 2006

This review is from: Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It (Hardcover)
I, too, had my reservations about the book. Then I started reading it (in the bookstore) and couldn't put it down. It is like a close girlfriend just telling it to you like it is and saying "girl...if you want it , go for it, but be smart about it." I have new respect for Kimora and this book has completed shattered my previous opinion about her depth of character.
This book was really motivational and inspiring. Amazon has it linked to "Confessions of a Video Vixon"....dont waste your money on that book. Not even in the same class as Kimora's book. That book is just pure trash. Your money is not wasted on Kimora's book. You get your full money's worth and more!

This book really isn't for everyone. I feel that most of the advice she gave was not univeral but was very specific to the fashion and modeling industry. I felt that if I did have the things she recommeded at my job I would be fired.

The only thing that might be univeral is what she says about debt, but she doesn't really give a detailed plan to get out of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, April 11, 2006

It's hard to truly admire Kimora Lee Simmons at first glance. All her fabulousness, diamonds, and bling seem to all stem from her very fortuitous union with a very rich man.

After reading her book, my concept of her changed. Fabulosity is smart, funny, and contains a ton of poignant quotes from individauals from the hip hop sphere and beyond. Kimora could have easily become a housewife, but instead owns a company whose net worth rivals that of Calvin Klein. Fine, she married a rich man, but she has also made a name for herself and a dynasty for her children--well done.

I'd recommend the book to anyone who really wants to make it in fashion or magazines. She offers sound advice from a hip-hop point of view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring, May 29, 2006
This review is from: Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It (Hardcover)
I absolutely loved the book! I am a single mother and have so many ambitions and this really gave that "kick in the butt" that I needed! This book is very "girly" oriented and encourages women to be strong, confident, smart, and not to take mess off of anyone ... especially men! She does devote a couple of entire sections to the contents of her closet, which I didn't find entertaining, but the pros completely outway the cons. If you're a strong woman who needs to be reminded you're wonderful and necessary to your family, kids, and this world in general ... GET THE BOOK!!!! It also has quotes by famous people at the end of each chapter which are really neat. I had to jot them down.
