4.0 out of 5 stars Great source for teachers, July 24, 2001

Want to stir up discussion after a reading selection? This is a great book to do so. When teaching literary elements such as analysis of character, story plot, setting, etc...this book provides cards to promote discussion in group settings or students can sit at their desks and work independently. This is also a great way to motivate your students into a lessson. I recommend this book to any teacher who would like to spruce their reading lessons up. This book also has very creative prompts that students can relate to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for literature circles, March 26, 2011

This review is from: 50 Fabulous Discussion-Prompt Cards for Reading Groups (Paperback)
These cards are practical, fun, and thought-provoking. They are a handy, time-saving resource for teachers who would like to encourage active, meaningful discussion about the books the students are reading. The cards can be used in structured or unstructured literature circles, but a bit of planning and preparation is required.

The question cards are divided into themes:
Walk in a Character's Shoes (Character) - Cards 1-8
What's the Big Idea (Theme) - Cards 9-12
Where and When? (Setting) - Cards 13-16
Suspense-Building Techniques (Story Structure) - Cards 17-20
Living the Story (Personal Connections) - Cards 21-28
Reading Between the Lines (Making Inferences) - Cards 29-32
The Real World (Nonfiction) - Cards 33-40
Talk-Show Time (Creative Dramatics) - Cards 41-52

These discussion topic cards can be used for both fiction and non-fiction titles, and will serve to engage students, not only with the books they are reading, but also get them thinking about how to make real-life connections.
