In simple language, Lesley introduces multiple techniques to use when working with Lutradur, a transparent non-woven web material. (Fiber & Stitch, May 1, 2009 )

I love making mixed media art but sometimes I start to feel like I'm simply repeating the same techniques over and over again. It begins to feel a bit stale and I sometimes look over my work thinking that it has all pretty much begun to look the same. So, when I first saw Lutradur being used, I was more than intrigued. What is Lutradur? It's a nonwoven polyester material that's sort of a cross between fabric and paper. It's tear resistant and won't fray. Just the description of the product peaked my interest but Lesley Riley's book Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur really set it into overdrive. Riley provides you with all that you need to know about colouring Lutradur using paints, inks, oil pastels, crayons, and dyes. She moves into teaching techniques such as stencilling, stamping, printing, and transferring. Then, things get really exciting when she shows you how to stitch, burn, emboss, needle felt, and foil with it. Riley even includes a very helpful chart in the book that outlines how Lutradur responds with various common adhesives and when being adhered to other types of materials. In all, there are 27 techniques to add texture, dimension, and interest to a wide variety of art projects. Finally, Riley is joined by other artists such as Claudine Hellmuth, Jenn Mason, and others to present 14 different projects giving you the opportunity to try out these techniques ranging from baby's blocks to collages to scrapbooks to art quilts. She has taught extensively in the US and as far away as Italy and Australia. Her art and articles have appeared in numerous publications and juried shows. Lesley's second book, Fabric Memory Books, combines fabric and innovative ideas with the art of bookmaking. Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur (C&T) takes a new material to a new level. Lesley defines Lutradur as 'the magic in the middle' - an art material that combines the best properties of both fabric and paper.

Her next book, due out Spring 2011 is Creating with Transfer Artist Paper (TAP), an iron-on transfer paper Lesley deeloped that transfers inkjet printed images to fabric, paper, wood, canvas and more.

Lesley has filmed three instructional DVDs with Creative Catalyst Productions and Interweave. Not one to be camera shy, Lesley has also appeared on three episodes of Quilting Arts TV Season 1. Currently, Lesley is the host of BlogTalk Radio's Art & Soul show.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for working with Lutradur, January 31, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars Lesley Riley Knows Lutradur, February 7, 2009

This review is from: Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur(r): For Quilting, Papercrafts, Mixed Media Art 27 Techniques & 14 Projects Revolutionize Your Craft Experience! (Paperback)
Everybody is talking about Lutradur, but no one seemed to have the whole story. That's where Lesley's new book comes in. She starts out by telling you about Lutradur -- what it is, how it's made, and why it's so special. Then she describes 27 things you can do with Lutradur from adding color and pattern (think of the fun things you can do with paint, inks, and dyes), screening and printing, glueing and fusing, needle felting, and even using heat to cut and distort it.

After the techniques, Lesley shares a broad array of projects made by a variety of fiber artists. There's a project for every taste and temperament, incorporating the techniques in the earlier section of the book. Want to stamp and stencil? It's in there. Want to create three-dimensional objects with Lutradur? It's in there. It's all in there. I can't wait to try some of these wonderful ideas.

And she makes a suggestion that I really appreciate: she says to pick a new technique for which you already have the tools and try it on one of the pieces of Lutradur included in the back of the book. Yup! The book includes one sheet each of two different weights of Lutradur. And so once you've bought the book, you can actually play with the Lutradur without any additional purchases. I can't wait to try it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource!, February 6, 2009
This review is from: Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur(r): For Quilting, Papercrafts, Mixed Media Art 27 Techniques & 14 Projects Revolutionize Your Craft Experience! (Paperback)
If you're a mixed-media junkie like me, then you'll want this book! I've had Lutradur sitting on my shelf for months, not quite sure what to do with it. I had no idea it was such a versatile material, and can be used in so many finished projects. Lesley gives a thorough explanation of all the things you can do with Lutradur, including: painting, coloring, stamping, transferring, stitching, collaging, stenciling...the list goes on! And she includes beautiful finished projects done by her and other artists, with instructions on how they were completed. I've purchased many, many art/craft books, and this is one that makes me jump up, grab some of my art supplies, and start playing right away--the ultimate test of a good book!
