One of the areas of medicine that has not seen a decline in patient interest with the recession is that of plastic and cosmetic surgery. Yes, there is an obsession with aging that is more prevalent now than in the past with the baby boomers seeking to stay young in spirit, mind, and body and appearance, but the interest is not only confined to vanity, glamour and cosmesis: like it or not, the job market caters to the younger people and the competition this sets up encourages more and more women and men to look their best as they seek jobs. With all of the new developments in the industry of cosmetic surgery - laser in all its complex manifestations, radiofrequencies, ultrasound and other 'machines' that can turn back the years and reduce the body contour, as well as the popular use of Botox, fillers, fat transfers, stem cell and plasma cell introduction to replace aging tissues - the possibilities to approach retrograde time is not just a dream but a substantial possibility.

Dr. Peter Adamson, a facial plastic surgeon and head of the University of Toronto's Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, has taken the time to share some very important information for people who are considering altering their faces and bodies with the help of these new advances. Where Adamson succeeds where others who have published articles or written books about the 'new state of plastic and cosmetic surgery' is his very honest, caring approach to guide potential patients in their decisions about taking charge of their appearance.

Fabulous Faces by Peter A. Adamson, M.D.

Fabulous faces all around,
How can I blend in?
I'm unhappy with the way I look,
And the state I'm in.

I've felt like this a long, long time,
I need to change my looks,
I've done my research, searched my soul,
Exhausted many books.

I've asked tough questions, thought them through,
Counseled with the best,
Found my doctor skilled and smart,
He puts my mind at rest.

This book can be a guiding light,
To refresh life's tired ride,
Plastic surgery can reveal,
The "true" you locked inside.

Factual. Motivational. Rich testimonies. Inspiring. Credible. Recommended.

Before picking up this book I had done MANY hours of reseach on the internet because I wanted to make an educated decision before "going under the knife". I wasn't sure if it was going to be worth it to purchase this book because I already knew so much from hours of online reading but I'm so glad I did. The book has supported a lot of my research (which is great) but the reason I'm taking the time to come back to Amazon.com and write a review (a first for me) is because I think the value in the book is the information that I would never have thought to look-up online. The part that helped me most was the patient diaries. Even the stories about surgeries other than the one I'm doing were useful. Doing this surgery is a major decision for me and if I'd just gone with my reading online I wouldn't have known as much. I am now starting the process of interviewing surgeons and feel confident when I speak with them that I'm going in with my eyes wide open.

This book will interest anyone medically inclined or just interested in plastic surgery. Dr. Adamson details the process of rhinoplasty and facial surgery for the avid reader. The reader will enjoy the short glossary of medical terms, the interesting, realistic stories, skin maintenance secrets, and insider information. There are many suggestions offered up by the people who chose plastic surgery as well as the doctor himself. The reader will like learning about what to expect, how recovery goes, what to eat, how painful the process is, etc... This book will hold the reader's interest throughout the entire read; the blunt honesty and plain dialogue of the patients will please the reader and make him/her feel as if he/she knows the patients intimately. This is a wonderful read for young adults/adults who enjoy medical nonfiction.

Fabulous Faces is an excellent guide book for anyone who is thinking about plastic surgery. I am not planning on having plastic surgery, but I found the information in Fabulous Faces to be insightful. Dr. Peter Adamson is a facial plastic surgeon from Toronto. He specializes in the field of otolaryngology. This field of surgery involves procedures the head and neck. Fabulous Faces explores the reasons why women and men choose to have cosmetic surgery. There are portions of diaries of real patients in this book. It is moving to read how people feel about getting a face lift or a rhinoplasty. There is a range of feelings from apprehension to happiness in the words of these patients. Adamson also provides a list of things to do and not do after a procedure to heal properly. There are mainly two procedures discussed in this book. They are the face lift and the rhinoplasty. Each step of a face lift and a nose job is explained in superb detail here.

There is information about how to care of my skin using different kinds of moisturizers. There are two different types. One type of moisturizer prevents water from coming in. Another one lets water come in. My skin is quite dry, so I found this to be helpful. There is another section of the book that discusses biofield therapy. This involves using the energy field around the body to reduce emotional stress and tension. I learned how the nose is considered to be a sexual organ. This part of the book is fascinating to read.

Fabulous Faces is filled with quotations. There is a beautiful quote from Shakespeare's Othello. This quote reminds me to treat my body like a garden. There is a quotation from an author named Jean Kerr. This quote is her opinion of the belief that beauty being only skin deep. This quote is so funny.
