Kindergarten-Grade 3?Skunks Stenchy, Reeky, Smelly, and Stinky are a hard-working band. They practice night and day in Stenchy's basement until her mom suggests that they're good enough to play at the teen center. They get a whiff of the trouble ahead when everyone rushes out just as they arrive. Oblivious to their own scent, they continue to set up until the manager yells, "You guys stink!" Though all seems lost, the manager gets a brilliant idea, revealed in the final illustration?the teens in the audience (who are animals as well) have their noses safely clipped against the band's odor. Readers will love the fact that the skunks have no clue of their embarrassing situation. This is a fun read-aloud choice for children who crave more sophisticated content but still enjoy picture books. Koscielniak's humorous, cartoonstyle illustrations invite individual browsing. Young children, however, will probably miss some of the rock-and-roll allusions.?Lisa S. Murphy, formerly at Dauphin County Library System, Harrisburg, PA

Ages 4^-7. Smelly, Stenchy, Reeky, and Stinky, a band collectively known as The Four Skunks, are eager to get a gig at the town's teen center. Their demo tape lands them an audition, but when they appear, the manager of the center finds them as malodorous as they are melodious. The skunks, who live for their music, are oblivious to the fact that it's odor, not ardor, that is making fans faint. But fortunately, the manager of the teen center has an idea about how to keep the focus on the music. The ending, in which music listeners receive clothespins for their noses on admission to the dance, falls a little flat (do kids even know what clothespins are anymore?). But up to this point, the story is laugh-out-loud funny, and artist Koscielniak highlights every bit of humor in the text and adds some of his own in the sprightly pen-and-watercolor art. This exudes--charm.
