What a great book. All the freak brothers comix in one big lavish volume. If you are or ever were a Freak Brothers fan, look no further than this huge graphic novel. Never fear fat freddy's cat fans, he is included in this volume and just as funny as I remembered. 3.0 out of 5 stars underground slapstick
If R Crumb is the Charlie Chaplain of underground comics - a virtuoso original whose wit and imagination are matched only by a macabre humor - the FFFB are the three stooges of the genre. As a kid I greatly enjoyed these stories for their outrageous humor, their audacious crudeness, and their vaguely hippy "message" of drugs and no-rules libertinism. Looking at them...

What a great book. All the freak brothers comix in one big lavish volume. If you are or ever were a Freak Brothers fan, look no further than this huge graphic novel. Never fear fat freddy's cat fans, he is included in this volume and just as funny as I remembered. What makes this so special,(to me at least) is the fact that these comics have been hard to come by and sorely missed. Not just for the gut busting hialrity they provide, at the antics this trio and thier cat get up to but that they bring me right back to the days, when I first picked up thier comics,in the 70's. It has 624 pages total and two sections in full color, on coated stock paper. The other pages are in black and white. There is a removable dust jacket which has a different illustration than the book cover(a coated stock paperback type cover)which is a nice touch. The only thing I would have done differently is to have the cover of each issue and then follow with that issues original stories in order. The way they set it up I'm not sure what order it is in. This may be nit picking but remember, I had the original issues.I highly recommend this. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection, November 21, 2008

This review is from: The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Omnibus (Paperback)
Soft cover Omnibus has it all. Mostly black and white, with some color pages. It's crazy, I have all these mint old copies of this stuff, but I don't want to mess it all up by reading it. So I got the Omnibus so I can actually enjoy the material. When I was a kid, Gilbert Shelton was my favorite cartoonist. My grandmother told me when I was a kid I could read anything I wanted to. She would go into the Greyhound Bus station and get Freak Brother comics for me, isn't that cool? Fat Freddy's Cat really amused me then, still does now. Freak Brothers is some of the best comic writing out there. Very funny stories. Easy to read size.

Let me start by saying that if you are reading this review you are probably my age (44) or older. Also let me say THANK YOU MR. SHELTON!!!

I'll never forget my intorduction to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. While sitting on a 9 hour bus trip in Europe back in 1981 my buddy Dan-Daly passed me a copy of one of the FFFB's comics and I read it from cover to cover laughing the whole way.

Later, in 1985 I found a head shop/record store in San Marcos, Texas that carried the FFFB's comics as they were released. I eagerly awaited each publication.

If you are familiar with the FFFB's comics there is no need for me to review the content...you alreay know how funny, smart and comtemporary they were to the 1970's pot smoking scene.

Like President Clinton "I never inhaled" but despite the fact that I did not get high the comics and I made an immediate connection to the world of the FFFbs. The three brothers Phineas, Franklin and Fat Freddy are the comic world equal to Cheech and Chong...only better. Yes they are that good/funny. Sorry Cheech and Tommy.

The Ominbus contains all the comics that mad you howl back in the day. Some in black and white, some in color...true to the original publishings.
The only problem is that some of the type and frame size of some of the offerings in the Omibus are TOO DAMN SMALL.

My 44 year old eyes can't read some of the gems hidden on the pages of the book. I still have all of the well worn and read original comics (in protective plastic covers)in my collection, good thing as I need them to fill in where I can't make out the type in the Omnibus.

If you were a fan of Fat Freddy's Cat or the on going battle with the Roaches be prepared to be disapointed.

You need a magnifying glass with a built-in light to be able to read them.

None the less I am still amazed at how cool my wife was to score me this Omibus for X-Mass...I'll be passing it along to Dan...as a gift of thanks 27 years later for the introduction to the super cool, funny and clever world of the FFFB's.

Gilbert Shelton is the owner of the most well exectuted, consistent and polished underground comic (FFFB's) from the era. To have the Omnibus (which is nearly the size of a city phone book) is so cool.

The Omibus contains a plea for help funding a FFFB's movie through contribuitions, donations or investment. There are a couple of claymation stills showing what the movie would look like. There is even an provision to be able to buy a number of frames where your name will be displayed in the film.

I always thought Ron Jeremy would make a great Fat Freddy...even if they go with Claymation Ron would be perfect...he's of the era and loves mainstream film work...hire him if it comes to pass Gilbert!

Anyway, these are my thoughts on the Omibus...I do read it and enjoy it...at least the pages I can make out. Thank god I still have the original comics so when I can't make out the type I can refer back to the original source.

Long live Gilbert Shelton and the FFFB's!!!

Come back to America Gilbert...we need you!

Peace.
Rick

I was concerned because of a handful of reviews that stated the quality of these reprints was not so great, but I just got my copy today and I can vouch - the quality is just fine. Maybe some people got a knock-off version, or a copy from a bad run. I posted a picture in the customer images section above, hope this helps.

Insanely hilarious, everything Cheech and CHONG tried to be, but never were. For those of us who LIVED those times, and experienced the era, first hand, the FREAK BROTHERS, are a psycho-active time trip, to a warmer, fuzzier, zanier part of our lives, gone, forever, but yet live on, between the covers of this marvelous book. Five stars, a knife and a fork.

Even a little old granny lady could not fault this book. It seems to be the whole kit-n-kabboodle-- on glossy, hi-test paper. The complete works, including the only photo of Shelton I've ever seen. I'm half way thru and have yet ti find anything I haven't read before (which should date me)-- but I'm hoping. It's the Freaks-- in all their subversive, gritty and irreverent splendor. You'll go thru this 600-pager like a knife thru butter, young or old.

I was happy to see the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Omnibus on sale, because I have nearly all the old comics in, well, comic book form. The printing in the Omnibus looks like a hazy xerox in the color section and the B&W section. Some of the pages were wrinkled, too, especially in the color section. I think my copy was printed in England, but I could be wrong. Quality control should have caught this problem. I still get a kick out of the Freak Brothers, especially when they use those old corny jokes from vaudeville.

Being around this earth for 50 years, and have being doing lots of camping. There
is nothing better after a good day of outside activities to finally sit down near
the water's edge and read the freak brothers and fat fready the cat comics. They
sure put a smile on your face, especially if you can related to the material.
Once again,,, many thanks for putting out this Freak Brothers Onmibus book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can rest my tattered comics, October 9, 2010

Finally, all the adventures of those Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers collected together in a format that is great to read and will last to pass on to further generations.

Take a trip back 40 or 50 years and live with those filthy hippies. Feel the trepidations of having no money to score.

As I grew up I changed my motto to:

'Books will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no books'

It is much healthier, and you never run out! Try out the Rand Holmes Retrospective if you like these guys!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Bathroom Reader, August 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Omnibus (Paperback)
Having every Freak story in one hefty tome is wonderful. Almost every page has great clarity, though a very few look muddy. Some of the tiny Fat Freddy's Cat strips at the page bottoms are hard to read, but are available in large size in the FFC Omnibus. Fat Freddy's Cat Omnibus

These are still great comics, from the glory years of the counter cultural movement, which is now a chapter in American history, alas. I do wish the stories were presented in chronological order, but that's not much of a detraction.

Thank you Gilbert Shelton and company.
