If you have grown weary over the glitzy, tacky cruise ships sailing the high seas today, buy this book and step back in time when ships were ships. 2.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT
This would have been a fine book if it had not ignored so many of the earlier Cunard and White star ships. The Aquitania, Mauritania, Lusitania and so many of the smaller Cunard ships were not even in the book. The Olympic class ships rated a couple of un-interesting photo's-nothing on any other White Star ships
Far too much of the book focuses on little known and...

If you have grown weary over the glitzy, tacky cruise ships sailing the high seas today, buy this book and step back in time when ships were ships. No neon here, just lots of polished woods and brass, the way God intended. Mr. Miller's commentary complements the stunning interior photographs of most of the great liners and cruise ships of bygone days and up til present time. The NORMANDIE, REX, QUEENS MARY and ELIZABETH, even the infamous, tragic TITANIC. The high point seems to be the 20's and 30's, when Art Deco was the range, and the low point, IMO, the 50's and 60's, with that horrible Scandinavian Modern.

If the book has any flaws, it is that it focuses too much on transatlantic liners, and not enough on liners from other routes. Still, it is a must for ocean liner fans. Perhaps Mr. Miller will update this book and include some other liners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive collection of photos, June 30, 1998

Well illustrated with black & white photos illustrating stunning interiors from many ships. The text, though informative, tends to be repetitive and not as extensive as it could be.

...through the wonderful pictures in this resource. The book includes photos from beloved ocean liners throughout the 20th century. For those of us too young to experience more of the golden era of ocean travel than the Queen Mary, this is a great way to catch up vicariously.

William Miller is my favorite ship historian/author, and this is my most treasured book of his. There's never been a better collection of pristine ocean liner interior photos in one book! I'm always amazed at the sights of these classic liners!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential 'Liner Buff Resource, February 17, 2007
This review is from: The Fabulous Interiors of the Great Ocean Liners in Historic Photographs (Dover Maritime) (Paperback)
This book together with the other Wm. Miller books in this series are excellent resources for those fascinated with Ocean Liners and their history. Wonderful and extensive photos take the reader from the Edwardian interiors of the turn-of-the-century Liners thru to the modern interiors of the few current Liners still operating.

There is one possible disappointment: if you are looking for an extensive offering of Titanic interior shots you won't find them. RMS Titanic receives no special attention here. What you do see from both the Titanic class and their contemporaries is suprising, excellent and varied.

A very fine, small book.

Far too much of the book focuses on little known and not particularly interesting vessels

On the plus side many nice photos of French and Italian ships.
