Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 UpASerious paper airplane crafters will welcome the 16 model gliders diagrammed here. However, the book is at least as valuable for its detailed account of the history of motorless planes from the early 19th-century experiments of Sir George Cayley to the new, high-tech PW-5 Smyk that will be used when soaring becomes on Olympic sport in 2000. In specific but nonmathematical terms, Schmidt explains Bernoulli's principle and other aerodynamic effects, then describes the use of gliders in wartime, the development of gliding as a competitive sport, and the continuing refinements in design and materials. The models, all but one of which are based on real gliders, are not for novices, as even the simplest has 10 pieces and the author warns that precise cutting and adjustments are required for good results. Nonetheless, Schmidt makes the construction as easy as possible with plenty of tips about safety and technique. He also instructs readers to photocopy the pages, and not cut them out. For its historical background, consider this as a companion to John Bringhurst's Planes, Jets and Helicopters (Tab Books, 1993).AJohn Peters, New York Public Library

From Booklist

Gr. 6^-12. Readers familiar with Schmidt's previous books on paper airplanes who are ready to build more-sophisticated flying paper models will definitely want to see this book. Besides providing patterns for 16 gliders (all but one are models of actual gliders), Schmidt supplies a history of soaring flight and glider development, instructs readers in the basic principles of aerodynamics, and describes how to test and launch the paper gliders. Pattern pieces, which can be photocopied and cut from card stock, are clearly labeled, and the detailed step-by-step instructions leave little room for error. A brief history of each glider accompanies a full-color photograph of the completed model. A glossary of aviation terms is appended. Chris Sherman

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy for a great book, September 24, 2004

This review is from: Fabulous Paper Gliders (Paperback)
This book was a godsend for those who love whitewings, but don't want to shell out money to have more than one plane. The planes take about 20 minutes to cut out each, and another 20 minutes to assemble. The smaller planes seem to be a little heavy so choose your cardstock carefully. The bigger planes fly the best.

I have built two of them from cardstock, printed on a laser printer, and can't wait to build another one. This is a fun book filled with facts about flying and airplanes. Each page has facts about the gliders, as well as physics principles behind them.

If you want more planes, there's a companion book that offers jet planes, written by the same author.

I bought my book new at Atlantic Books for $3.98

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK, August 2, 2000

This review is from: Fabulous Paper Gliders (Paperback)
This book is an OK book. It has gliders for beginners to Intermediate makers. I recommend that you get the kit or else you will have to get unusual sized index cards and would also need to copy the pages. You should not cut the pages out incase you need to refer to them or if you lost a piece so you could redo them. The instructions are somewhat confusing but you could understand them. The book has an interesting section about gliders, about them and tips for your glider such as makeing them fly better by adding something at the end... and tips to make it look nice. Overall I give the book an OK, three stars.

Everything was quick, especially shipping... Great price too. Description was a bit off as one page was cut out but not mentioned. Over all I'm satisfied with my purchase
