The Face of America: OX PULL. Newfangled contaptions such as the tractor have almost banished draft animals from rural America, but in Maine, where rocklike loyalties change slowly, some old-timers still fancy a hefty span of oxen to haul stoneboats and "twitch" logs out of the woods. Here, at the West Oxford Fair, Fryeburg, they are watching Star and Line, owned by Roger Bragdon, of East Berwick, win a distance class by pulling a boat loaded with 2000 pounds of stone 126 feet, nine inches, in five minutes. Winners get local glory, little cash; Bragdon's purse was $6.50. Photograph by Kosti Ruohomaa. ..... 1957 Saturday Evening Post Picture, A5198A.
