The Face of America: Bargain Month. As every woman knows, January is the time of "white sales" across the land, when exhilerating bargains can be found in bed sheets and pillow slips, towels and tablecloths. Why are they called "white sales"? Traditionally because linens and other products made of white cloth were the principal offerings. But that was an older, less colorful day. Witness last year's sale at Scruggs Vandervoort Barney, Inc., in St. Louis: There's some white, to be sure, but more pinks, mauves, lavenders and blues. The women, oblivious of such technicalities, ignore pulsing feet and aching backs as they doughtily sort the wares, ever hopeful. The scarcity of men is traditional too. Few males are courageous enough to brave a department store during a women's sale. Photograph by Shelley Grossman. ..... 1958 Saturday Evening Post Picture, A5220A.
