The Face of America: Sentinel of the Sea. Purple Lupines bobble nonchalantly above the ragged cliffs of the Oregon coast, where the Yaquina Head lighthouse has stood since 1873. The light station was intended for a location ten miles north, in order to replace another lighthouse which had been built by mistake at the entrance to Yaquina Bay, three miles south. But despite its inconstant origin, this Coast Guard sentinel has proved a faithful friend in fair weather and foul to the ships and fishing boats under its vigil. Photograph by Chuck Abbott. ..... 1957 Saturday Evening Post Picture, A5200A.
