This book brings the exotic cheetahs into your home and classroom in a first class manner!, June 1, 2009
This review is from: Face to Face With Cheetahs (Face to Face with Animals) (Hardcover)
Cheetahs are the "fastest land animals on the planet," but that doesn't mean they can be complacent because they do have enemies. There are other animals that can easily overcome them because they are stronger. Lions, hyenas, leopards, hunters and poachers are their worst enemies. These beautiful animals can attain a top speed of around 70 miles per hour. This book describes the cheetah's physical characteristics that enable it to attain this top speed.
Chris Johns, National Geographic editor and wildlife photographer, was ecstatic to have the opportunity to photograph cheetahs in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. In this book you can read about the very rare face to face encounter he had with a family of cheetahs. Can you imagine the thrill of having a cheetah cub gnaw on your boot? You will learn, as Chris did, many interesting things about the lives of cheetahs. You will learn about their habitat, their scientific name, how they are raised, how they hunt, where they live, why they are so fast, their status as an endangered species and what you can do to help. You can also learn "how to chirp like a cheetah." Don't try this one in class!
The magnificent photography in the "Face to Face" National Geographic series bring the exotic into your home and classroom in a first class manner. The casual writing style draws the reader into the book and you can feel as if Chris himself was sitting on your living room couch telling you a story. In this book are informative sidebars, a section on ways you can help the cheetahs, a guide to writing your own story, a facts and statistics section, a glossary, an index and an additional recommended movie, books and web sites. As Chris says, "stay close to nature. Learn about it. Appreciate it. Enjoy it. It will enrich your life."

Good kid's book, February 28, 2010
This review is from: Face to Face With Cheetahs (Face to Face with Animals) (Hardcover)
A very short picture story about cheetahs for kids. Wonderful photos and good facts with some anecdotal stories mixed in to personalize it. Only 31 pages makes it barely a night time story book or good for your kids book review project.
