Gr. 6^-8. Simpson introduces familiar women named in the Bible; lesser-known ones, such as the Prophetess, Gomer, and Abigail; and a host of others, some of whom the Bible simply refers to as widows, daughters, or wise women. Considering the brevity of the tellings (two to three pages per subject), some of the individuals are wonderfully fleshed out. However, the profiles are not for the fainthearted, dealing with subjects such as beheading and adultery. Among the memorable characters introduced are a queen who meets a horrible death, and a prostitute who marries a prophet. Particularly touching is the story of the Queen of Sheba, who possessed great wealth and beauty and was also a seeker of knowledge. Unfortunately, the bland Disneyish illustrations do little to bring the characters to life. Shelley Townsend-Hudson
