Excellent Real-World Content, August 5, 2006
This review is from: Face the Issues: Intermediate Listening and Critical Thinking Skills, Second Edition (Paperback)
Carol Numrich has prepared a wonderful listening textbook that centers on the real-world news content supplied by National Public Radio's All Things Considered. It is appropriate for high school, college, and adult students and integrates reading, conversation, vocabulary, grammar, note-taking, and critical thinking skills into lessons that are focused on listening. Longman's excellent reputation in ESL publication and National Public Radio's award-winning program make this a quality resource, along with accompanying audio files, for intermediate to advanced students.
The book is divided into 12 units, each of which centers on a short audio piece. The unit begins with predicting and vocabulary exercises. Then students listen to the piece several times with specific questions or points related to the content to evaluate as they listen. Follow-up exercises include individual and group activities that focus on grammar concepts, conversation skills, and related writing. A transcript and answer key are provided in the back of the book.
