Book Description

February 17, 2009
The freshman fifteen launched a lifetime battle with mental wellness. For Jennifer A. Carle, weight gain in college was unacceptable. The pressure from her peers and parents led her to abuse laxatives as she became bulimic. Still riding the eating disorder rollercoaster after marriage and two children, she recognized the need for help and began taking Prozac. After getting better, she stopped taking Prozac and tried to continue life like anyone else. As her life began to spiral out of control once again, though, she ended up finding that Prozac would be the only thing that could save her from herself. Follow Jennifer as she begins to accept herself as a regular person despite living with eating disorders, anxiety, and PMDD in A Face of Prozac.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well-Prescribed Memoir, May 24, 2010
This review is from: A Face of Prozac (Paperback)

A Face of Prozac is a memoir-style novella about the author, Jen Carle, that follows her through her experience with anxiety, eating disorders and Prozac. It goes in depth about how the antidepressant helped her cope with a number of issues and circumstances she went through.

When I first picked up this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. I am not a strong believer in pharmaceuticals, so reading a book that reinforces such habits didn't interest me. However, I was familiar with Carle's first book, "Finally Winsome", and I enjoyed her writing style, so I decided to give "Prozac" a chance. I'm glad I did.
Her same familiar voice and style were there, but her tone had changed from the loving and sentimental Jen from "Winsome", to a serious--and, at times, desperate--tone. I was able to see on a personal level how Prozac affected her, how it stabilized her thoughts and feelings. It gave me a better understanding about people who use and even some who depend on perscription drugs.

I would definitely recommend A Face of Prozac. Not only is it a story that I myself found interesting to read, it would be an encouragement those who find themselves in the same stressful situation--one that is increasingly common these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS, FUNNY, HONEST~, January 5, 2010

This review is from: A Face of Prozac (Paperback)
I LOVED this book! It was a smart, fabulous journey of a person that figured things out for herself, and never gave up even when times were really, really rough. A mental-wellness success-story brutally honest, sad and funny at the same time, which for me equals a masterpiece. It's hard not to read this book in one sitting, the story grips you til the end~ Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for All Women, April 5, 2010
This review is from: A Face of Prozac (Paperback)
A Face of Prozac is a real account of Carle's young adult life. As a college freshman, she was pressured into being thin by peers and family members. What resulted was a battle with Bulimia that would follow her into motherhood. Carle shows us the mind and perspective of a Bulimic so vividly that one can't help but nod in agreement about how much body image issues affect women (and men!).
Jen's salvation comes in the form of a little pill call Prozac. That magic little pill helps her to overcome her eating disorder and get her life back on track. However, once coming off of her prescription, her life begins to spin out of control once again, this time affecting not only herself, but her two children as well. I'm not going to spoil the ending. You will just have to read to find out what happens to her kids.
Whether a college student or a new parent or an older adult, I think people of any age could love this book. It's a bit graphic at times, so I wouldn't suggest it for younger children. A Face of Prozac is a book that should definitely be in your bookshelf. One way or another, it's going to inspire you.
