A Well-Prescribed Memoir,
By
This review is from: A Face of Prozac (Paperback)
A Face of Prozac is a memoir-style novella about the author, Jen Carle, that follows her through her experience with anxiety, eating disorders and Prozac. It goes in depth about how the antidepressant helped her cope with a number of issues and circumstances she went through. When I first picked up this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. I am not a strong believer in pharmaceuticals, so reading a book that reinforces such habits didn't interest me. However, I was familiar with Carle's first book, "Finally Winsome", and I enjoyed her writing style, so I decided to give "Prozac" a chance. I'm glad I did. Her same familiar voice and style were there, but her tone had changed from the loving and sentimental Jen from "Winsome", to a serious--and, at times, desperate--tone. I was able to see on a personal level how Prozac affected her, how it stabilized her thoughts and feelings. It gave me a better understanding about people who use and even some who depend on perscription drugs. I would definitely recommend A Face of Prozac. Not only is it a story that I myself found interesting to read, it would be an encouragement those who find themselves in the same stressful situation--one that is increasingly common these days.

I LOVED this book! It was a smart, fabulous journey of a person that figured things out for herself, and never gave up even when times were really, really rough. A mental-wellness success-story brutally honest, sad and funny at the same time, which for me equals a masterpiece. It's hard not to read this book in one sitting, the story grips you til the end~ Highly recommended!

A Must-Read for All Women,
By
This review is from: A Face of Prozac (Paperback)
A Face of Prozac is a real account of Carle's young adult life. As a college freshman, she was pressured into being thin by peers and family members. What resulted was a battle with Bulimia that would follow her into motherhood. Carle shows us the mind and perspective of a Bulimic so vividly that one can't help but nod in agreement about how much body image issues affect women (and men!).
Jen's salvation comes in the form of a little pill call Prozac. That magic little pill helps her to overcome her eating disorder and get her life back on track. However, once coming off of her prescription, her life begins to spin out of control once again, this time affecting not only herself, but her two children as well. I'm not going to spoil the ending. You will just have to read to find out what happens to her kids. Whether a college student or a new parent or an older adult, I think people of any age could love this book. It's a bit graphic at times, so I wouldn't suggest it for younger children. A Face of Prozac is a book that should definitely be in your bookshelf. One way or another, it's going to inspire you.

Rachel Hale, Author of "Fiddlesticks & Cornpaste with Pirates and Pistachios!",
This review is from: A Face of Prozac (Paperback)
While I am fortunate enough to not have to struggle to the extent of this brave woman baring her soul to tell a tale with (and of) hope to help other women in situations similair to her own, I confess to some extent, I could totally relate to her story! Beginning at the dreaded "freshmen fifteen" and ending with a hope for a better tomorrow and an I'm okay today, this is a book that I think ANY woman could identify with!

The title and cover notes did not clearly indicate what this book would contain. The author's various problems which led her to Prozac are things that happen to many women. Most of these women do not have any idea what is going on with themselves. I urge every woman to read this book.

If you want to read about every last thing one of her children did on a day to day basis buy this book. Is it about Prozac, no not really! I read about 10 pages before I put the book down. I would not have even given this book one star but I did I suppose for effort? Don't buy this book!
