The collection s music component, selected by Lofgren himself, comprises 169 tracks, stretching back to Lofgren s early work with his Washington, D.C.-area band Grin, which he founded at the age of 17 in 1968, and surveying both his major-label solo albums and independent self-released music. Two of the CDs contain 40 previously unreleased tracks and rarities. The DVD features 20 video clips selected from a body of performances as diverse as Nils career.
A detailed, lavishly illustrated 136-page booklet, with an introduction by noted rock journalist Dave Marsh, contains Lofgren s track-by-track commentary and personal reflections on his work, as well as his tours of duty as a sideman with such luminaries as Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Ringo Starr. The set also contains homages to Lofgren by such colleagues as Bonnie Raitt, Joe Walsh, Sting, Bono, and Paul Rodgers.
In its entirety, the set gives a full-length, intimately detailed picture of the performer Neil Young who hired the 18-year-old Lofgren to play piano and guitar on After the Gold Rush in 1969 calls an inspiration to me for many years. A true triple threat, Lofgren has distinguished himself as the writer of melodic, affecting, and hard-rocking songs, a sensitive and seemingly ageless singer, and a guitarist of incomparable power and imagination.

The music as you can see from the listing below spans his entire career and includes previously unreleased material.
I find it unbelievable he hasn't had a load of hits over the years as his he has written and played some fantastic music.
CD's 3 and 4 are my personal favourites.
As an all round singer songwriter and multi instrument player Nils Lofgren is up there with the best of then and in particular his Guitar playing is better than awesome.
I have collected just about all of Nils CDs over the years. Many of them of them are quite hard to come by now. (I now note "Night after Night" has recently been released as a Japan double CD replica without slashing tracks) I have seem him in concert about a dozen times in the UK over the years, This collection certainly is a worthy purchase and addition

This 9 CD, 1 DVD set looks to rectify that situation and also give Nils the attention he deserves as an artist. Even for fans this set will be essential with two discs of rarities and a DVD of performances.
This is a nicely designed set with a 120+ page book. The CDs are housed in a large cardboard holder. I'm not a big fan of the design for this myself but if you store it carefully, it could work. I myself will be storing them in jewel boxes. There is a card inside that is numbered and signed by Nils.
There are minor quibbles that one could make about the track selection and what's missing but, on the whole, this is an excellent set.
No silly stuff like marbles, etc.--just the music, a signature card, a great booklet and handsome package design.
This is limited to 3000 copies so I would pick this up while you can.
From his early days with Grin (1+1 produced by Graham Nash) is a classic to his most recent releases this box captures with 10 discs the varied career, mostly forgotten is his solo records which although not one of the most gifted songwriters is packed full of very good songs. Remember also Nils played on the first Crazy Horse record with his back to the camera on the cover as his record company wouldn't allow him to play on this as it was on Reprise, he played and sang with Danny Whitten! Live Nils is tremendous, as a guitar player he is astounding live - catch next time he's in your area. Limited editions tend to include loads of padding but this box is full of gems.

I have been waiting for this release for a while now. I am most curious about the two CD's of unreleased and demos. The DVD should be good fun as well. Also a 136 page booklet summarizing his career is also good.
