A post-Bewitched good role for Elizabeth Montgomery., December 21, 2001
This review is from: Face to Face [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Elizabeth Montgomery is a very good actress, she prooves that many times. We all know her excellent job in the long running serie Bewitched, in the sixties. But after that, she became the queen of TV-Movies. In "A Case of Rape" (1974), "The Legend of Lizzie Borden" (1975), "The Awakening Land" (1978), "Act of Violence" (1979) and "Amos" (1985), she was absolutly at her best. In this film, "Face to Face" (1989), one of her last role (Liz died in 1995 at 62 years old...), she returns in comedy after a long time in dramas. The photography of Africa is beautiful, and Elizabeth Montgomery and Robert Foxworth, who were a nice couple in real life, seam to have a lot of fun working together. Very good film without violence.

Face to Face, Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, July 16, 2011
This review is from: Face to Face [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am a collector of many kinds of things. One thing I collect is Hallmark Hall of Fame movies. I have a full collection of titles from the time Hallmark reserved the distribution rights to their movies. Now, I am on quest to collect as many of the movies that were released by companies other than Hallmark. This movie is one of those titles. It originally broadcast on January 24,1990. How do I know this? Well, there was a book published on the 50th anniversary of Hallmark Hall of Fame & its title is "UCLA FILM AND TELEVISION ARCHIVE presents Hallmark Hall of Fame The First Fifty Years." It was published in 2001. I got my copy on eBay. I am a correspondent with a lady who is the head of Marketing for HHofF & she calls me "Hallmark's biggest fan".
Now, about the movie. I liked it. It's a funny love story of Elizabeth Montgomery playing the part of an American paleoltologist & Robert Foxworth. Both are claiming rights to dig in an area she thinks will reveal more parts of a three-million year old man & Foxworth digging for meerschaum, from which the bowls of tobacco smoking pipes are made. It's electric, the relationship that develops between them. I'm going to quote from the book I mentioned, because I just can't say it better. "Bill Kaufman of Newsday stated that veteran actress Elizabeth Montgomery as "wonderfully cast in the role of the brilliant scientist with a gift for verbal sparring". Kaufman also praised the cheerfully volatile chemistry between Elizabeth Montgomery and costar Robert Foxworth, affirming that their pairing "brings to mind Spencer Tracy & Katherine Hepburn." So true, so true, it did that for me too.
Now a film being labelled as a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie makes several statements, just by having that distinction. First, there will be a good story. This movie has that - two people who have claim to the same plot of land, looking for two different things & romance develops between them. Second, wonderful cinematography. The story is set & filmed in Kenya with a lot of supporting characters who look like they come from that area & the scenery is BEAUTIFUL. Third, there will be little violence, sexuality, or swearing. That is also true with this movie. Fourth, HHofF movies are editted to run in a two-hour time slot on network television, with fourty minutes for commercial breaks. So, why don't I give it 5 stars? Well, simply, I LIKED it; I didn't LOVE it. And Hallmark didn't secure the rights to this movie, so I am little disappointed. Would I recommend it to a friend? YES! I likely will! There is absolutely no mention that this is a Hallmark movie anywhere on the packaging. I would not have known it was a HHofF movie, had I not read about it in the book I mentioned. I enjoyed Bewitched when it was boradcast, so I already liked Elizabeth Montgomery. I don't recognize Robert Foxworth, but I am sure he has done some notable works.
I have found, on-line a picture of the Hallmark Hall of Fame logo that I can print on my PC's printer & add that as a sticker to these "street copies". There was also a time when HHofF titles were released in two versions - The Gold Crown Edition & "street copies". "Street copies" are just the movie & were marketed by discount department stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc, at a cheaper price than the Gold Crown Editions which are marketed by the Hallmark Stores. Generally, speaking, a street coy could cost between $10 & $15. But the Gold Crown Edition usually sold for $20 & up. Since I have both in my collection, I can tell you the difference: Gold Crown Editions have some added special features. One of thoseis a "Making Of" featurette. In that, key crew members & cast members are interviewed & there is a story about the filming location. Are the special added features worth paying more for? I can only answer for myself - sometimes. I enjoyed this movie. It's a great movie when you are feeling down & need to have a feel-good movie, with some laughs.
