Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this, the eleventh title in the National Geographic Face to Face with Animals series, readers will learn a few facts about gorillas, especially why they are threatened, and view close-up photographs that give a sense of what it would be like to be a few feet away from them. Award-winning photographer and author Nichols has spent much of his life raising awareness about the plight of gorillas, and through brief text and accompanying photographs he shares some of his experiences as well as information about their family structure, habits, habitats, and connections to humans. The back matter includes sections on how the reader can help, a challenge to develop an appropriate zoo habitat for gorillas, “facts-at-a-glance,” a brief glossary, and a list of resources. This is of limited value for research, but useful for inspiration. The attractive format will appeal to the intended audience. Gorilla Doctors: Saving Endangered Great Apes (2005) by Pamela S. Turner covers similar territory. Grades 3-5. --Randall Enos

Ebobo, a silverback lowland gorilla living in Africa, was trying to strut his stuff and scare all the camp workers half to death. They wanted to kill him, but Mike Fay told them that he really meant no harm and to wait. Ebobo would "knock down banana trees, throw bamboo, and pound his chest with his fists." If you saw something like that you'd probably run like crazy to get out of the way! After a while something changed and he no longer slammed around and figured that "These guys are with me now."

He disappeared for a couple of years and when he returned he came with a family, something he sorely needed to ease his lonesomeness. In this book you'll get to see some stunning photographs of these magnificent creatures. You learn that they are the "largest of all primates," their temperament, what they eat, how the young learn survival skills, how long the babies stay with their mothers, their predators, traits we have in common with them, the three most common types of gorillas and where they are found, diseases they are susceptible to, their habitats and more.

This is a marvelous book on the life of the gorilla in the wild. The book is very informative and the reader will be absolutely charmed by a few of the photographs of the little ones. Throughout the book you will find scattered sidebar facts about them including one on "How to Play Like a Gorilla." In the back of the book you can read about ways you can help, two pages of "Facts at a Glance," a glossary, an index and additional recommended book, article, film and web site resources. If you were charmed by Koko you'll love this book too!

This is a very good, well written Childrens book! The photography is awesome of course! I notice a lot of reviews about books like this sometimes complain that they are to short. Please remember this is a childrens book! Childrens books are always 32 pages. The information is spot on. This book is great for kids AND adults! who want good basic info about Gorillas.

Format: Hardcover
It is a great introduction to gorillas, and a really great introduction for children. It is easy to read, and it has a list of terms in the back to increase a child's vocabulary. Also, it includes lots and lots of pictures, and ways to help out.
