Facebook Fairytales is a collection of real-life dreams come true! The author makes you feel like she is telling you the story of the most incredible thing that happened to a good friend of hers- almost as if you were chatting online or over the phone. It is a delight to read and so inspirational...and aesthetically beautiful!

The Power of Social Networking,
By
This review is from: Facebook Fairytales: Modern-Day Miracles to Inspire the Human Spirit (Paperback)
Many people have a tendency to think that Facebook is a social network only devoted to games like Mafia Wars or Solitaire, when in fact, social networking on Facebook is specific to connecting individuals with people who are important in their individual life. I found this book full of stories of people, real people, not made up avatars or anonymous names. Having heard a story or twenty similar to these in the book, I am really glad that Ms. Liebert took the time to pull together these tales for others to enjoy. If you have a heart and like stories of warmth, read this book.

It's alive and well in this book!Who better to report this happy news than someone who was interviewed for Facebook Fairytales by Emily Liebert? That would be me. In a chapter spritely entitled "Magic Touch," Emily Liebert tells the story of my now 22-year-old son Dan Mulvaney who suffers from severe Autism and -- like many people with Autism - uses Facebook. It helps him to slowly digest facial expressions and respond to people on his own terms, in his own space, in his own time frame. It works the same way for Chou Chou Scantlin, a Washington D.C. based 56-year-old gorgeous and talented showgirl and singer - and former Shakespearean actress -- who has high functioning Autism and yes, is Facebook friends with my son Dan. Emily got our story right. She got the facts right, the tone and the warmth - and the urgency of Facebook. As an author and a journalism professor, this leads me to believe she got the whole book right. So as I read the other fascinating stories in this compact but important volume which is about our society, as much as it is about social networking, I feel confident I am hearing more real voices from real people. The layout is ingenious and gorgeous. If you appreciate art in the production of books, then this is a must buy.

I received this book as a gift from my niece who is a college student and thought i should know something about social networking. All I knew was that everyone seemed to be on facebook. Now i understand not only why but how powerful facebook is to enable life's changes and advances. Whether is it making connections for adoptions or advancing careers or enabling transplantation of a organ to ensure a life. I was also fully amazed at the role Facebook played in the election of Barack Obama. Emily Liebert tells these stories in a compelling voice and the imperative becomes clear. Becoming Facebook smart is essential for anyone who wants to maximize opportunity or seek to solve problems that have seemed to have no solutions. The author captures the meaning of these moments, the stories jump off the pages, and I realized that I too must be a member of this community. Hopefully the author will follow up with a how to book to ingite our imagination as we begin to harness the power of the extraordinary tool -- Facebook. The book is very well presented with good use of color and beautiful paper which enhances it as a gift book. FACEBOOK is not just for the college crowd. It is very exciting.

The Phenomenon that IS Facebook,
This review is from: Facebook Fairytales: Modern-Day Miracles to Inspire the Human Spirit (Paperback)
Emily Liebert had a brilliant concept for a book, and Facebook Fairytales doesn't disappoint. As a fan of this phenomenal social networking website and because I have personal experience with both finding long-lost friends and also being found, I was eager to read her collection of "Modern Day Miracles to Inspire the Human Spirit."From the first page, I couldn't put it down. It's well-researched, well-written, relatable and highly entertaining. The reader is guaranteed to meet individuals he or she will immediately want to "friend." Liebert's collection includes some stories that might border on "miraculous," however, I felt they were actually more mundane--and more relatable to all of us who use the site. The stories do, however, range from the poignant tales of a son finding his biological father and a woman finding a kidney donor, to something as simple as one person finding a lost, six-toed cat named "Bob." Reading the book definitely inspired me to use the site (even more) to locate other long-lost friends and acquaintances from my past. I should note I initially joined just to keep an eye on my kids . . . and yet, I've become hooked. Very well done. A great read and I highly recommend this book. How to Explain Social Media,
By
This review is from: Facebook Fairytales: Modern-Day Miracles to Inspire the Human Spirit (Paperback)
I spend a lot of time trying to explain to people why Facebook, Twitter, and other forms on online social media is important. Some people get it right away. Others are more skeptical. They've heard horror stories about people being taken advantage of online. What has been needed for a long time is a good book that provides uplifting stories about the good that people can do using Facebook and other websites. That is what this book providesThe stories in this book are great; not because they bring out complicated nuances of the human condition, but because they reflect the best in all of us. We need to hear more stories like this.

I was reluctant to use Facebook but this book shows the powerful and wonderful possibilities. The 25 stories are diverse and span the range of heartwarming romance, to political efforts of the Obama administration to gain voters. And the interview with Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook founder and CEO) is inspiring.Emily Liebert truly captured the spirit of each person interviewed. This is a great book that every user of social media should buy.

I had the opportunity to interview Emily Liebert on the site I write ([...])for regarding Facebook Fairytales and its connection to The Social Network movie. Emily was my first interview and was very nice, open funny and revealing. She truly cares about her work and the people she interviewed for the book. She has kept in touch with the people she wrote about and not just to make a profit, but chatting with her I could tell it meant a lot to her to see people benefit such as a mother and father separated for years. The stories are fascinating. Normally I don't go for mushy stuff too much, but Facebook Fairytales is very well written. I'm not just saying that because she did an interview with me. I'm actually glad to have the book and my mother is currently reading it.As for the book, again it is very well written. Each chapter represents a different story. 25 chapters with 25 fascinating stories ranging from the father-daughter story to stories of love found, old love rekindled, strangers donating organs, tragic losses turned into positive stories. Emily has a way of presenting each story in an uplifting manner, but the people she has written about are also special and positive influences and they show the potential for how people should be in society. Emily also shows how Facebook as a social network is meant to be positive. If you think about it little things like having a Like tab to click and not having a hate or dislike tab shows the positivity. A lot of people want a dislike or hate button but when you think about it that is not so positive is it? In a cynical world Facebook and Facebook Fairytales rises above it all taking readers on a fascinating ride of all different aspects of life and the good side of human nature. I wasn't sure I was going to like the book going in, but frankly I love it. So should you. Quit reading this review and "Add to cart". I can't wait for the sequel already. Hurry up Emily! :-) |
