Book Description

December 26, 2010 0321743733 978-0321743732 2
With more than 500 million active users around the world and still growing steadily, Facebook is more than just another social media site. In the words of author Dave Awl, Facebook is “the new town square”—the place where people gather to discuss the news of the day as well as share what’s going on in their lives. And Facebook can actually be a useful business tool as well as a great way to promote creative projects.

So what's new in the second edition of Facebook Me? Facebook has changed dramatically since the book was first published, and this newly revised and expanded edition will bring readers up to speed on all the new features and interface elements that have been added and revamped in the time since. It addresses the ongoing controversies about Facebook's privacy policies, with detailed coverage of Facebook's privacy settings and advice for keeping your Facebook experience as secure as possible; as well as expanded info on Facebook's sharing tools and how to control who sees what.

It includes a brand-new chapter called Advertising and Promoting on Facebook that shows you how to apply the principles of social media marketing specifically to Facebook's user culture, in order to maximize the "ripple effect" of Facebook's news feed to win new fans and customers and build stronger bonds with existing ones. Plus there's an expanded chapter on "Facebook at Work"how to keep your profile professional, avoid getting in trouble, and use Facebook for job hunting. And in the etiquette department, this edition features new guidance on how to deal with conflict and avoid flame wars between Facebook friends.

All in all, Facebook Me! takes you on a guided tour of everything Facebook has to offer and shows you how to get the most out of the time you spend there, while helping you avoid some of its pitfalls!
  • Find out what you can do on Facebook, and what it can do for you.
  • Reconnect with old friends and make new ones, let your friends know what you’re up to, and share photos or video—all while protecting your privacy.
  • Learn Facebook etiquette: how and why to friend someone, how to socialize politely, whether you should friend your boss—and how to keep your profile looking professional if you do.
  • Publicize your projects, business, or causes: Post to your Wall, set up a Page, organize a Group, or invite friends to Events. Discover how to use Facebook’s News Feed to connect with an audience that reaches far beyond the boundaries of your own friends list.
Look for the Facebook Me! page on Facebook to connect with the author and other readers of this book!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Facebook Me! manages to stay fresh and current, even as Mark Zuckerberg keeps changing things up every couple of months. It's a fast, breezy, fun read, as Awl takes us through the basics (skip this part if you're not a newbie), discusses privacy and security (including phishing, Trojans and "clickjacking"), how to grow your audience as a brand and how to engage your friends as an individual, how to manage the multitude of add-ons at your fingertips, how to advertise on Facebook and much more. If you've been wanting to learn more about the ins and outs of Facebook, start with Facebook Me!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific guide to using Facebook!! May 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
Unfortunately, books don't constantly stream us incremental updates in the ways our friends do on Facebook. Therefore, we have had to wait far too long for a terrific new edition of this really great Facebook guide.

The rest of this review is a recap of what I said about the first version. While this new edition has lots of new material on the ever-expanding ways to leverage Facebook, the core idea of this being more a guidebook than a reference manual holds true more than ever!

This is not a book about facebook, it is a book about how to get personal value out of facebook -- an important distinction. Dave Awl begins by explaining that he is a very unlikely author for such a volume -- having been dragged into the facebook world by some old friends. He soon discovered that facebook enabled him to connect with old friends, express his creativity, and participate in a vibrant online community.

The book is written for the novice and expert alike. Writing is informative, engaging, and unexpectedly funny throughout. Graphics are abundant -- those who prefer to skim could probably learn alot just by reviewing the screenshots and captions. Of particular interest is that Dave helps navigate not only the pages of facebook, but the culture of facebook, including how to handle unwanted friend requests, how to guard your privacy, and how to manage the flow of information you get in your friend's newfeeds.

This is one of the rare technology books that I believe will be enjoyed equally by those who thrive on the online experience as well as those who have some fear of it.

Great job, Mr. Awl! Now if you can just write a book about some of the other sites I use...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Update May 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
I am so glad that Dave Awl put out a Second Edition of this great book. Be sure you get the Second Edition -- it is a great resource -- lots of research, plenty of tips, loaded with detailed instructions, with leads into distant parts of the Facebook universe.

If you are new to Facebook, this book will help you figure out how to get up and going; if you are a casual user, this book will give you ideas on what else you can do; and if you are an expert user, this book will surprise you with how much you can still do on facebook. All with the latest FB interfaces.

Very readable, with plenty of examples and screenshots . . . . this is a great tool. Thanks, Dave Awl, you have given us another treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better the 2nd Time Around! May 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
When I purchased the 1st edition of Facebook Me, I was a relative newcomer to the social networking world. It provided the guidance that I needed to navigate the ins and outs of privacy settings, how to post pictures, how to edit entries and all other manner of how-to information. Now that Facebook has been around for a while, it has gotten more complicated. Enter, the 2nd edition of Facebook Me. No longer just a social networking tool among friends, you can now use Facebook to promote your business, your interests, your favorite band, actress, cause.....just about anything that needs promoting. Third party applications also greatly complicate the privacy issue. I find this book to be a very useful tool in explaining all of these things and more. How do I set up a page to promote my business? How do I control my privacy settings so that 3rd party advertisers can't reuse my pictures? These answers and more are within its pages. The author's writing style makes even complicated concepts very easy to understand. It's a witty and enjoyable read as well.

As social networking continues to evolve, the users of this technology have a responsibility to themselves to stay current. This book is an excellent way to do that!
