Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up. Wintervale University, a school whose resident students seem to spend their waking hours scaring or insulting one another on-line in an "exclusive" chat room called the Ratskeller, is the setting for this first episode of a slam-bang, often confusing cyber-serial. (The publisher has set up a real on-line chat room for young readers to communicate with one another.) The students?all of whom assume cyber-nicknames such as "Goldeneye," "Night Beest," "TwiliZone," and "Q" (who is really the all-powerful "Lurker" manipulating the mostly interchangeable characters in the story)?seem to live the nightmarish scenarios hatched on-line by their fiendish classmates. Gia receives numerous e-mail threats from a mysterious "Dethboy" who claims to be responsible for her roommate's disappearance and perhaps murder. This leads her into a maze of interlocking and conflicting relationships with classmates who incriminate themselves on-line and off-line and treat her like a pariah. Readers who stick with this seesaw, hi/lo novel won't know much more at the end than they did at the beginning?except that there will be other trips to Wintervale. There's no need to worry, though, that the faceless students will ever graduate; there's no time to go to classes (and in fact, there don't appear to be any). Included with the book is a disk that runs on Windows containing character profiles, diaries, and other Lurker information.?Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego
