Review

Praise for PEEK-A-BOO! and SMILE!

"Two board books that preschoolers will love, particularly when snuggled in the lap of a loved one.... Toddlers love looking at other children and these titles hold plenty of interest for them." --School Library Journal (February, 1998)

My baby loves the photos and the text is simple.
Ariella's Mom
The book has mostly moms so I do wish there were more daddies hugging and kissing in the book, but other than that my baby loves it!
Megan
Our 14 month old has loved this book since he's been about 7 months old.

I don't understand it, but my 17 month old loves this book. She will ask me to read it repeatedly. That is okay, because I can always coax a few hugs and kisses out of her when we do read the book.
The book itself is very simple and takes less than a minute to read. The pictures are great though of many babies and parents getting hugs and kisses. She will point at each page and say "baby."

ISBN 0439420032 - Age range not stated. Printed in China. Board book, 10 pages. A Baby Faces book. Published by Scholastic Inc., in 2002. By Roberta Grobel Intrater.

Color photos of babies getting hugs and kisses are captioned with a short, simple rhyme.

Children love photos of children, so that part alone is likely to get some love from the kids, and the kids mean way more than the adults. For the adults, here is something to know about what's NOT here... Most of the "kissers" appear to be moms, so when there is suddenly a father, the first thing you may think is "dude, that chick has a mustache!" Then you'll realize it's a guy. This is an issue, because we want our kids to know that dads love their kids every bit as much as moms, and they're so under-represented in this book. There are eight women (including the cover) and two men! Additionally odd, the men are black and Latino. What, white dads don't love their kids? It's not a balanced message.

As for what IS here, this is a cute book. While the gender balance is off, the race balance is pretty good. It's small enough to take along when you're out and about, the thick pages are easy for small fingers to manipulate and the glossy pages wipe clean easily. The photos are happy and loving depictions that will reinforce one important message: Mommies love babies! I really like this book, but it's time for an update to the photos - bring in some dads!

Sweet little book. It is very simple, yet my 11-month-old granddaughter spends a lot of time looking at the wonderful pictures. It is great too because she usually gives hugs and kisses to her doll, teddy or even better to me! A great little book to have at my house when she comes to visit.

We are long-time fans of baby books with faces as the primary "art". This is a new series for us and we LOVE it! My daughter really enjoys seeing the babies and the "story" helped us teach her more about hugs and kisses (which she doles out often now!). Great choice!

my little guy loves it and turns to the page that shows a raspberry on the tummy as if to say give me one!

It's very simple little book, but the rhyme scheme works with a nice rhythm (a must for this mom), and my son loves pictures of babies. It's a little young for him now (he's 2), but he still likes the pictures a lot, and we often read it along with a book with more words, or for those times when we can only fit in a short story. It's a very nice little book for babies up through toddlers.

I got this for my daughter when she was around 1 year and was starting to kiss everyone and everything. We were trying to teach her about hugs as well. Now she's 13 months and this is one of her favorite books--she gets extremely silly when I read it to her and LOVES the babies in it. Kissing the naked newborn on the belly is the best one. Very sweet book.
