5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story with Great Photos
I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I picked up "Faces of War: The Untold Story Of Edward Steichen's WWII Photographers" by Mark D. Faram. What a pleasant surprise awaited me. It was like finding a toy at the bottom of a Jacker Jack box when I was a kid. I had no clue as to even who Edward Steichen was - let alone the men under his command. It was truly...

I have extensively looked through this book at the local bookstore with a mind to buying it, and it appears to be written well, but I have a major complaint which has kept me from following through with the purchase. My complaint is about the pictures. Shouldn't this book be about the photos?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story with Great Photos, July 31, 2009

I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I picked up "Faces of War: The Untold Story Of Edward Steichen's WWII Photographers" by Mark D. Faram. What a pleasant surprise awaited me. It was like finding a toy at the bottom of a Jacker Jack box when I was a kid. I had no clue as to even who Edward Steichen was - let alone the men under his command. It was truly interesting to discover this whole story and see the wonderful photographs. The author has done some great research and weaves the story together so that it is not just reading dry history but is great entertainment.

The Bonus DVD is just that - a huge bonus for the reader! What a great attachment and is well worth the price of the book alone. I give this book my personal recommendation and will tell others about it. This book is not just for history, or WWII buffs, or even for those photographers - this book will appeal to all kinds of readers because it is human story that is fascinating.

The photos taken by this team of Navy photographers are public domain images, because they were taken for the US Government. So, they should be available for everyone to use and share with each other. This book, however, includes only one photo on glossy paper which is suitable for scanning. When I saw the disc in the book, I was hopeful that it was a CD-ROM with electronic images of at least all of the pictures presented in the book. Alas, however, it isn't, instead it is a DVD of interviews and the like. Why didn't the publishing company include a CD with high-quality electronic copies of the best photos taken by the photographers written-about in the book? That would have made this book very valuable. Most of us don't have the time or means to obtain our own quality copies of these photos from the National Archives. Unfortunately, this is a missed opportunity.
