Facilitating as a method of course instruction is increasingly being used in the fields of education and training. In the role of facilitator, a teacher or trainer reduces the amount of direct instruction given to the group of learners and instead facilitates more active and self-directed learning. This handbook presents the rationale for adopting the role of facilitator in an experiential learning context. It covers every kind of group work, including - personal development and therapy, interpersonal skills, specialist professional skills, self-directed and peer learning and problem-solving, discussion and decision making. Using many real-life examples, tables, graphs and figures, the author offers guidance which will enable trainers and teachers to adopt the facilitator style most appropriate to the needs of their own students.
