5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!
This honest, gripping account of Bear Grylls trek to the summit of Everest is a must read. He eloquently takes you thorough the excitment and the grave dissapointments that surround such a climb. He is both vulnerable and strong, lucky and prepared, and takes you along for the ride. You will feel like you are right there with him; and, you will put it down with a new...

3.0 out of 5 stars Big Bear fan!
So many books have been written about climbing Everest its hard now for any author to stand out.

I confess I'm addicted to Bear's TV shows but was curious how this book would stack up. Overall I enjoyed the the book - mainly when Bear was giving insights into his training and his self doubts on the mountain. However sometimes I glazed over as it went over the...

He is both vulnerable and strong, lucky and prepared, and takes you along for the ride. You will feel like you are right there with him; and, you will put it down with a new respect for climbing and a new respect for nature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Facing Up is a remarkable read., April 1, 2009

This is one of the best, if not the best, books I have ever read on climbing Mt. Everest... right up there with "Into Thin Air". Bear Grylls tells it like it is. You can almlost feel every struggling breath for oxygen and the pain in every muscle as these climbers acclimate themselves to the horrendous conditions above base camp. A must read for Everest enthusiasts.

Same book as The Kid Who Climbed Everest 1.00 edition, same text, same dedication, same afterword, same photos, different cover art. So, no need to purchase both. Excellent climbing book, right up there with Into Thin Air (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) For those with delicate sensibilities, there are some graphic accounts of bodily functions and death on the mountain. Until I started reading this book, I had no idea Mr. Grylls had been severely injured in a parachuting accident prior to his climb of Everest and subsequent wilderness career. I was always impressed with him, now I am more so. He is one of those people who lead extraordinary lives that the rest of us can admire safely from our armchairs. I am reading this aloud to my 12-year old and she loves it! We are both fans of his show and I look forward to purchasing some other books by Mr. Grylls, fiction and non-fiction.
